Exploring Calvin & Hobbes: A Beloved Comic Strip Exhibition at Fenimore Art Museum

Fenimore Art Museum Presents Exploring Calvin & Hobbes

The Fenimore Art Museum, located in the historic town of Cooperstown, New York, is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition titled Exploring Calvin & Hobbes, which will run from September 13, 2025, to December 31, 2025. This captivating exhibit pays homage to the iconic comic strip originally created by Bill Watterson, which entertained readers from 1985 to 1995. The exhibition aims to delve into Watterson's unique mastery of the comic strip medium, showcasing his engaging characters, insightful narratives, and inventive layouts.

A Journey into Imagination

Once at the height of its popularity, Calvin & Hobbes appeared in approximately 2,400 newspapers globally, and it remains a cherished masterpiece in the comic world. The exhibition will display original daily and Sunday strips, alongside select pieces from Watterson’s extensive collection of over 3,000 original artworks housed at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. Watterson's artistic talents earned him two Reuben Awards for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1986 and 1988.

Meet the Characters

The narrative follows the imaginative six-year-old Calvin, who is named after the theologian John Calvin, as he navigates childhood with his anthropomorphic tiger friend Hobbes, named after the philosopher Thomas Hobbes. While Hobbes appears to others as just a stuffed toy, Calvin perceives him as a lively companion, embodying friendship, adventure, and sometimes a hint of danger. Together, they explore life's challenges, supported by a diverse cast, including Calvin’s parents, his neighbor Susie, his babysitter Rosalyn, the school bully Moe, and his teacher, Mrs. Wormwood.

Engaging Experiences for All Ages

In addition to the main exhibition located in the Scriven Gallery, visitors can indulge in an interactive children’s makerspace available in the East Gallery. This space will include a drawing table, an engaging activity guide, and life-sized models of the beloved duo. This initiative aims to inspire creativity and imagination, making it a perfect destination for fans of all ages.
