Michael Kosta Takes Center Stage at Karmanos Comedy Champions for a Good Cause

On May 9, 2026, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute will transform The Harmonie Club in Detroit into a hub of laughter and philanthropy. The event, aptly named Karmanos Comedy Champions, brings together a diverse group of individuals, including stakeholders, donors, cancer survivors, and caregivers, all united under a common goal: supporting the future of oncology through education and research.

Headlining the evening is the talented comedian, Michael Kosta, well-known for his witty stand-up routines and his memorable stint as a host on The Daily Show. His participation not only promises laughs but also raises much-needed funds for essential cancer research training programs offered by Karmanos.

A Night for a Noble Cause

The Karmanos Comedy Champions event aims to increase awareness and support for Karmanos' Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination. This initiative plays a crucial role in preparing high school and postgraduate students for meaningful careers in cancer research and clinical care. Arnold D’Ambrosio, Chief Development Officer at Karmanos, emphasizes the importance of events like this, stating, “We are excited that Michael Kosta has agreed to help us in this important effort.”

Funds raised from this delightful evening will directly benefit the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals committed to advancing cancer research. It is through initiatives such as these that students gain practical experiences and mentorship that might inspire them to pursue their future careers in oncology.

Building the Pipeline for Discovery

Karmanos' Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination, led by Dr. Morhaf Al Achkar, promotes education, mentorship, and career development across multiple stages of learning. The programs range from inspiring middle school students to exploring science to facilitating the development of postdoctoral researchers, thereby creating a sustainable pipeline of talented individuals ready to tackle the challenges of cancer research.

Dr. Al Achkar notes, “We are sparking the curiosity of the next generation to carry forward the vital work of understanding cancer and developing better treatments.” The program includes a variety of pathways such as:
  • - Detroit Future Healers: Connects high school students with Karmanos researchers through hands-on experiences.
  • - Biomedical Career Advancement Pipeline: Offers students practical six-week summer research experiences.
  • - Medical Mentor Pathway Program: Allows upperclassmen to shadow experienced physicians and scientists.
  • - Cancer Biology NextGen Scholars: Provides a 10-week mentored cancer research experience.
  • - Medical Physics Graduate Program: Equips students with skills vital for advancing cancer care.

These tailored programs have the potential to inspire today's youth to become the scientists and clinicians of tomorrow, making a real difference in the fight against cancer.

An Evening of Entertainment

The celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. with a strolling dinner, followed by the opening act Hip-Prov, an innovative Detroit-based improv group that blends comedy with hip-hop. Attendees will have opportunities to engage with the performers, making for an interactive and enjoyable night.

Michael Kosta takes the stage at 8:45 p.m., bringing his brand of humor that's been showcased on various late-night shows and his stand-up specials. As a former professional tennis player and now a celebrated comedian, Kosta brings a unique perspective to his performances, which he openly acknowledges, stating, “Cancer isn't funny, but Karmanos realizes sometimes you do need to laugh to feel better.”
