Castrol and Lunar Outpost Collaborate on Epic Space Documentary

Castrol and Lunar Outpost Present 'Drive Me to the Moon'

Castrol has proudly announced the release of a groundbreaking documentary titled 'Drive Me to the Moon', produced in collaboration with Lunar Outpost. This film, categorized as 'edutainment', takes viewers on an extraordinary journey into the realm of lunar exploration. It made its global debut at the Space Center Houston and closely examines the innovations required for mobility on the lunar surface, as well as the collaborative efforts between various sectors to bring these ideas to life.

The documentary represents the pinnacle of a three-year partnership between Castrol and Lunar Outpost, which includes the deployment of the first commercial rover to the moon during the Lunar Voyage 1 (LV1) mission. This rover achieved the monumental task of reaching the lunar south pole, showcasing the expertise and innovative spirit of both organizations. Castrol played a significant role in this mission by contributing technical knowledge and high-quality space-grade lubricants for the AstroAnt payload developed by the MIT Media Lab, utilized on the rover.

'"Drive Me to the Moon" provides an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and triumphs faced during the LV1 mission, from rigorous testing to successful landing on the moon. Through interviews with representatives from Lunar Outpost, former NASA and ESA specialists, and technical experts from Castrol, the documentary exemplifies how the synergy between science and industry can redefine the possibilities of space exploration.

This initiative is a continuation of Castrol's long history in space since the 1960s, providing essential lubricants for numerous transformative NASA missions, including the Apollo moon landings, Mars rovers, and the Space Shuttle program. The technologies developed through these space missions inform all of Castrol's efforts on Earth, maintaining the same level of care and innovation regardless of the environment.

The documentary's premiere is timely, coinciding with the NASA Artemis program's ambitious goal to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in over 50 years. The premiere event at the Space Auditorium in Houston featured prominent guests from the global aerospace and engineering communities, with discussions led by Gabe Sherman, former NASA Chief of Staff. This panel explored the documentary's creation, the challenges of lunar technology, and the future of commercial space exploration.

Notable participants included:
  • - Chris Lockett, Senior Vice President of Electrification and Technology at Castrol
  • - AJ Gemer, Co-founder and CTO of Lunar Outpost
  • - Rod Pyle, Author and Editor of Ad Astra
  • - Anita Sengupta, CEO of Hydroplane

Chris Lockett emphasized the broader narrative of pushing boundaries and testing technologies that challenge conventional wisdom. He stated, "This work reflects our philosophy - that the precision and innovation needed in space can also drive progress here on Earth, from electrification to industrial systems and beyond."

Furthermore, Fabiana Neves, Castrol Americas Vice President, noted that the film illustrates the collaboration between imagination and innovation, which mirrors the pioneering spirit that drives all Castrol's pursuits. She remarked that the premiere's location in Houston, a city renowned for its accomplishments in space exploration, was particularly fitting.

Joe Kane, Founder and Creative Director of Polar Media, the film's producer, stated, "Drive Me to the Moon delves deeper than just the rocket launch; it uncovers the true story behind human ambition. Our team, alongside Castrol's engineers, all share a common drive to push boundaries. This film offers an authentic look behind the curtain at the technology and expertise that makes these achievements possible, presented in an engaging, educational manner."

Justin Cyrus, CEO of Lunar Outpost, reiterated the significance of their partnership with Castrol, which was essential for advancing their Mission Control and preparing for future lunar explorations. He remarked, "Drive Me to the Moon pays tribute to the individuals, collaborations, and persistence that will bring humanity back to the moon for the first time in over 50 years. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a sustainable human presence and the future of living and working beyond Earth."

This documentary is a testament to Castrol's ongoing mission to test technologies at the limits of their capabilities, both on the moon and on Earth. The film is set to be available on the Castrol YouTube channel in February 2026. Be sure to catch the trailer as well.
