Revolutionizing Electricity with Pepa
Overview of Pepa
Updater Corporation, based in Setagaya, Tokyo, is shaking up the energy sector with the launch of its latest cloud-based electricity service, 'Pepa'. This innovative offering is powered by the 'Hagahaga Nature Power Plant' in Haga Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Under a partnership with NACS-J (Japan Nature Conservation Society), Pepa aims to merge biodiversity conservation with climate change countermeasures—ushering in a new era of electricity that emphasizes how power is produced.
Background
The urgency of climate action has sparked a rapid advance in renewable energy adoption. However, it has also created challenges, particularly concerning the impact of development on local ecosystems and natural environments. Recognizing these issues, Updater launched the 'Symbiotic Renewable Energy Project 10' aimed at creating ten nature-friendly power stations by 2028. The company's collaboration with NACS-J, signed in February 2026, aims to explore how renewable energy can expand while preserving biodiversity.
By utilizing agricultural land for solar power generation, Pepa facilitates both energy production and sustainable agriculture. The Hagahaga Nature Power Plant represents the third initiative under this project, and it serves as the first attempt to assess how renewable energy can be crafted while supporting the local environment.
Features of Pepa
Pepa provides a subscription-based model where users can rent segments of remote solar panel installations for a monthly fee. This service allows users, even those in urban environments like apartments where solar panel installation is not feasible, to access renewable energy.
Key features include:
- - No upfront costs or installation required
Users complete their subscription online in just a few minutes, without the hassle of upfront investment.
- - Smart matching technology
Pepa matches users' electricity usage with the power produced from their segments every 30 minutes, allowing for almost free usage of matched energy.
- - Market-driven surplus buying
Any surplus energy produced is purchased by Updater at market rates, creating savings on monthly bills.
Pepa centers on how energy is produced, advocating for a quality-centered approach to electricity generation amid concerns about environmentally destructive methods.
Launch and Subscription Details
The Pepa service will be officially available starting May 14, 2026, with applications opening to residents in regions served by Tokyo Electric Power Company. To participate, customers will need to have an existing contract with Updater's general energy service. Registration can be completed through a straightforward process on their website.
An online seminar scheduled for May 21, 2026, will provide further insights into the service, available at no cost to participants.
