The application period for the Japan Biological Olympiad 2025 is now open, with a deadline set for May 31, 2025. This competition targets young individuals under the age of 20 who have not yet entered a university, aiming to test their knowledge and skills in biology through both theoretical and practical examinations.

What is the JBO2025?

The Japan Biological Olympiad (JBO) is a nationwide contest that not only evaluates theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in biology. The first phase consists of online preliminary examinations where approximately 60 top performers will qualify for an intensive selection camp held at Tokyo Metropolitan University from August 18 to August 21, 2025. This competition serves as part of Japan's selection process for representatives to the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

Schedule and Eligibility

The theoretical examination will take place on July 13, 2025, from 13:30 to 15:00, allowing 90 minutes for candidates to demonstrate their knowledge. Young individuals from high schools, junior high schools, and other educational institutions, as well as pre-university preparatory students, are eligible to participate. Entry fees for the competition amount to 2,000 JPY.

Final Competition and Awards

During the finale, participating candidates will not only face further theoretical and practical challenges but will also engage in networking with other biology enthusiasts. Awards include Gold, Silver, and Bronze prizes, with special recognition given to the top twelve performers from second-year high school students or lower, who will be considered for selection as Japan's representatives at the next IBO 2026 in Lithuania.

The Selection for IBO 2026

Japan will send a delegation of four representatives and two alternates to compete in the IBO 2026. These representatives will be chosen during a selection exam scheduled for March 15, 2026, following exhaustive training and preparation.
