McDermott's First Subsea Project in Angola: A Milestone Achievement
McDermott International, a leader in energy engineering and construction, recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing its first subsea project for TotalEnergies in Angola. The project, which is part of the Begonia field development in Block 17/06, is located about 150 kilometers off the Angolan coast. This accomplishment showcases McDermott’s extensive experience and integrated execution model, bringing together engineering, procurement, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities under one umbrella.
The award of the Begonia project in 2022 marked a crucial addition to McDermott's portfolio, highlighting the growing capabilities of its onshore fabrication facilities in Luanda and the offshore installation supported by a versatile marine fleet. Notably, McDermott's Amazon vessel played a pivotal role, successfully installing over 40 kilometers of rigid pipelines, while the North Ocean 102 vessel effectively managed the subsea umbilical scope. This success emphasizes the operational strength and strategic advantage that McDermott holds in deepwater environments.
Mahesh Swaminathan, Senior Vice President of Subsea and Floating Facilities at McDermott, commented, "This milestone reflects the strength of our integrated subsea capabilities, executed seamlessly from engineering through offshore installation. Our partnership with TotalEnergies was vital, and it underlines the importance of local teams and partners in Angola for the successful execution of this project."
The Begonia field consists of five subsea wells that tie back to the existing Pazflor floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in Block 17. This recent development is expected to significantly enhance production capacity, as first oil was achieved in July 2025, adding approximately 30,000 barrels of oil per day to Pazflor's output.
McDermott's commitment to using advanced technologies in the energy sector underscores its reputation as a premier integrated provider of engineering and construction solutions. With operations in over 30 countries and a workforce of more than 30,000 employees, McDermott is dedicated to harnessing global energy resources responsibly while contributing to a sustainable energy future.
As the energy landscape evolves, McDermott’s ability to execute complex projects in challenging environments positions it as a vital player in advancing energy infrastructure worldwide. The strategic developments in West Africa, including Angola, highlight the region's growing significance within the global energy sector. McDermott’s continued innovation and collaboration with partners like TotalEnergies contribute to a more secure energy future, benefiting stakeholders and communities alike.
