Commercial Metals Company Honored with 2025 Obelisk Award for Arts Education Contribution
IRVING, Texas – Commercial Metals Company (NYSE: CMC), a distinguished name in the metal industry, has recently garnered the prestigious Obelisk Award for Arts Education from the Business Council for the Arts (BCA). This accolade recognizes CMC's remarkable commitment to fostering arts and culture in the North Texas region. The Obelisk Awards are celebrated annually, honoring businesses, individuals, and nonprofits that significantly support the arts.
For over 46 years, CMC has partnered with the Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas to host an annual contest and exhibition titled 'Scrap Can Be Beautiful.' This initiative has encouraged students from the school’s 3D design and sculpture classes to create stunning sculptures using metal scrap materials provided by CMC's local recycling yard.
"We are thrilled to receive this honor, which acknowledges our long-standing commitment to the 'Scrap Can Be Beautiful' initiative," stated Peter R. Matt, President and CEO of CMC. He emphasized that this competition serves not only to fuse art with education but also to engage students in environmental sustainability by repurposing scrap materials into works of art. CMC’s dedication to sustainability has been a core part of the company's mission for over a century.
Joel Austin, the Senior Vice President of Oncor and BCA Board Chair, remarked, "The Obelisk honorees exemplify the extraordinary impact business leaders have when they invest in the arts. Their contributions to time, talent, and resources significantly amplify our cultural identity, promote innovation, and establish North Texas as a desirable destination for both commerce and creativity."
