Mercuria Holdings’ CEO Leads a Special Lecture at Waseda Business School

Successful Guest Lecture by Mercuria's CEO

On May 8, 2025, Toshihiro Toyoshima, CEO of Mercuria Holdings, delivered a guest lecture at Waseda Business School's course titled "Japanese Management," taught by Professor Shigesuke Ikegami. This unique course is designed to help students understand the strengths, challenges, and management styles of Japanese companies from a global perspective, facilitating practical application in the business world.

The lecture attracted a diverse audience of nearly 70 MBA students, including international exchange students. Over a 90-minute session conducted in English, Mr. Toyoshima covered several key topics:

1. The Value of Systematic Academic Learning in Business
Mr. Toyoshima emphasized how structured learning can provide substantial advantages in navigating the complexities of the business landscape.

2. The Role of Finance in Japan's Economic Development
He explored the evolution of Japan’s economy, analyzing periods of pre-war, post-war, and the aftermath of the asset bubble, while comparing these phases to developments in Western economies.

3. Challenges Faced by Mercuria Holdings
Toyoshima discussed the various barriers the company has confronted, including geographic, psychological, generational, and market-related obstacles. He provided insights into the domestic and international economic conditions and institutional frameworks that influenced these challenges.

4. The Importance of Alternative Funds in Modern Society
He elaborated on the necessity of alternative investments in today’s market, highlighting their social roles and the benefits they can offer to investors.

Following the lecture, students engaged actively, raising numerous questions regarding Japan's economic stagnation and the potential for future growth in the Japanese economy. This exchange underscored the students’ keen interest in the discussed themes, particularly in navigating the intricacies of investment strategies that differ from conventional methods.

The Vision of Mercuria Holdings: Democratizing Alternatives

Mercuria Holdings specializes in managing alternative investment funds. Unlike conventional assets that tend to be more liquid, alternative investments usually require a longer investment horizon but hold the promise of significant excess returns. Given the relative lack of awareness regarding alternative investments in Japan as compared to Western nations, Mr. Toyoshima believes that it is crucial for Mercuria to raise awareness about these investment options, showcasing their appeal to a broader audience.

Looking ahead, Mercuria Holdings aims to spread knowledge and understanding of alternative investments in Japan through initiatives involving guest lectures, media appearances, and other platforms.
