Discover the Intersection of Art and Fashion
In a vibrant collaboration, contemporary artist
Tomokazu Matsuyama unveils a unique project titled
TYPE-XII Tomokazu Matsuyama project at the recently opened ISSEY MIYAKE flagship store in New York. This exhibition, which features a special installation in partnership with
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, represents a fusion of artistic vision and cutting-edge design.
A Collaborative Journey
The initiative began as a response to the overwhelming success of Matsuyama’s first major exhibition in Tokyo, held at the Azabudai Hills Gallery in spring 2025. Inspired by this positive feedback, a new coat has been designed, constructed from a single piece of fabric that embodies both Matsuyama's artistry and A-POC's innovative fabric technology. This project sets out to redefine the experience of art by allowing audiences to wear and engage with it.
From
July 9 to August 31, 2026, ISSEY MIYAKE / NEW YORK will host this special exhibition, showcasing a unique artistic interpretation of equestrian figures—an ongoing motif in Matsuyama’s work—through
A-POC ABLE’s groundbreaking methods. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience an immersive space where artworks are dynamically suspended from the ceiling, creating a stunning visual narrative.
Art to Wear
At the exhibition, attendees can view paintings related to the project along with the new coat that the experience revolves around. This piece will not only be a centerpiece but a testament to the harmonious convergence of fashion and fine art. The coat will be available in multiple colors and sizes, priced at ¥330,000 (including tax).
In Tokyo, starting
July 1, 2026, selected items will also be available at various ISSEY MIYAKE locations, including
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE / KYOTO and
ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442, which will showcase printed materials crafted in Kyoto.
Special Limited Editions
The New York flagship will feature an exclusive collection of T-shirts, adorned with seven of Matsuyama’s significant works printed on A-POC’s seamed knitwear, retailing at ¥44,000. The Ginza store will have a limited number of coats available through a lottery system for eager customers, emphasizing the exclusivity of this collaboration.
An Artist’s Vision
In his reflective statement, Matsuyama expressed how this collaboration rekindles the idea that creative intersections lead to groundbreaking new expressions. He feels a natural connection to the A-POC ABLE team, appreciating the amalgamation of history and tradition through contemporary challenges showcased in this collaboration.
