Experience the Unique Zen Retreat Villa Opening in Tokyo's Satoyama in 2026

Discover the Tranquil Escape of Zen Retreat Villa in Tokyo's Satoyama

The highly anticipated Zen Retreat Villa, operated by do-mo, is set to open its doors on April 11, 2026. Nestled in the serene environment of Akiruno City, this remarkable retreat will launch its reservation system starting from March 3, 2026.

The Concept of Zen

Zen (然), translating to a place where both mind and body return to their true state, is designed to merge comfortably with its surrounding nature while offering a luxurious getaway just an hour from central Tokyo. This unique retreat highlights a blend of tranquility and the rich natural beauty of the Satoyama landscape, encouraging guests to reconnect with themselves amidst lush forests and soothing silence.

The innovative structure incorporates Japan's first wooden floating foundation and accommodates up to seven guests. With amenities such as a sauna, water bath, kitchen, and a spacious deck terrace, the villa emphasizes open space and a redefined connection with nature.

Stay Experience

Zen Retreat Villa offers a comprehensive environment aimed at rejuvenating the mind and body through its thoughtful design. Inspired by six elemental components - architecture, earth, food, fire, water, and forest - guests will experience a harmonious blend of the elements throughout their stay.

The floating wooden foundation dynamically interacts with natural elements, evolving over time to support local biodiversity. Designed to breathe alongside the earth, guests can savor the uniqueness of this first-of-its-kind accommodation while resonating with nature's calm.

Culinary Delights from the Region

An essential element of the Zen experience is the culinary journey. Each meal features locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding area, including seasonal delights such as yamame, fresh eggs, and handcrafted tofu. Using these fresh ingredients, guests can enjoy exquisite meals in the comfort of their rooms. With a fully equipped kitchen, visitors can also engage in their culinary adventures during their stay, complemented by carefully selected coffee, perfect for a post-meal treat.

A Unique Sauna Experience

Take relaxation to new heights in the retreat's private sauna, complete with a water bath and an outdoor relaxation space. During winter, guests can cozy up to a wood stove, experiencing the calming sight of the fire, which facilitates a meditative state. Enjoy views of the forest from the bathing area, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere.

Connect with Nature on the Spacious Terrace

The expansive deck terrace provides ample space for yoga, meditation, and other activities, reinforcing the importance of open-air relaxation. Additionally, a private fire pit nurtures moments that celebrate the act of gathering around a warm fire.

Intentional Design Choices

The architecture of Zen Retreat Villa reflects a commitment to harmony with the environment. By utilizing a floating wooden foundation, the villa avoids heavy interference with the land, allowing for a delicate existence in nature. Each material was chosen for its strong connection to the site:
  • - Wood from the Tama region
  • - Locally mixed mortar for finishing
  • - Warm hues of persimmon dye on wooden components
  • - Natural light filtered through local washi paper

The interior design showcases gentle curves and organic forms, creating a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of a cave where serenity prevails, complemented by welcoming sunlight filtering through trees.

Zen Experience as a Modern Satoyama Retreat

The pricing for stays at Zen Retreat Villa transcends traditional accommodation costs. It reflects an enriched experience curated by do-mo, contributing to the broader narrative of the Modern Satoyama Experience:
  • - Private sauna overlooking the forest
  • - Coffee brewed with care
  • - Sumptuous dinner featuring local produce
  • - Campfire nights under starlit skies
  • - Deep rest enveloped in earthy walls
  • - Morning greetings with sunshine
  • - Nutritious breakfast featuring local favorites
  • - Tree meditation reconnecting with nature
  • - Detox time with local herbs
  • - Seasonal Satoyama strolls

Every aspect of the stay, from architecture and food to the natural environment, integrates thoughtfully designed experiences rooted in the philosophy of reconnection with nature.

At do-mo, we are committed to evolving our efforts from regeneration to re-creation, ensuring the preservation of Satoyama for future generations.
