Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Celebrates 100 Years with Art Communication Project Experience

Experience Art Communication at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

In 2023, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum launched an initiative aimed at sharing and expanding awareness of its Art Communication activities. This grand initiative, marked by the museum’s 100th anniversary in 2026, focuses on fostering shared experiences under the theme 'Viewing Together, Spending Time Together.' It presents an incredible opportunity for visitors to delve into meaningful interactions with artwork and others, highlighting the essence of collaborative engagement.

Engaging Multimedia Installations

The exhibition features a video installation curated by visual artist Yasuhiro Moriuchi, who re-edited footage from various programs held through the Art Communication initiative. The aim is to create a sensory experience where visitors can witness as individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to admire art, explore new perspectives, and cultivate relationships. These shared moments emphasize the power of art to unite communities and foster creativity.

Additionally, select pieces from recent graduates of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Kazuya Seki (sculpture) and Fuu Takeishi (Japanese painting), will be displayed. These works, showcased alongside 'Geidai Student Interviews' from the ToBiLa project, highlight the artistic journeys of these young artists as they navigate the world of art creation.

A Commitment to Inclusive Art Experiences

The Art Communication initiative originated in 2012, coinciding with the museum's renewal and aims to embody the mission of becoming a gateway to art for everyone. The initiative seeks to transform the museum into a space not only for exhibition but also for meaningful human connections through art. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the Art Communicators, or ToBiLa, who serve as facilitators in this environment, sharing insights and experiences that enhance understanding of the displayed works.

The exhibition also invites participants to reflect on the future of museums alongside the museum staff, emphasizing the evolving role of art institutions in society.
