LG Energy Solution Launches Major Production at New Lansing Battery Facility



LG Energy Solution, the largest battery manufacturer in North America, has initiated production at its state-of-the-art facility located in Lansing, Michigan. Covering an expansive 226 acres, this new plant signifies a substantial investment in the future of battery technology and manufacturing in the United States, with a focus on meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS).

The Lansing facility is expected to be a game changer, aiming for a capacity of over 35 GWh in battery output annually. It will specialize in manufacturing lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells tailored for ESS applications. These cells will be further integrated by LG Energy Solution Vertech into complete systems for utility and commercial purposes, enhancing the reliability of energy storage across the grid.

Additionally, the plant will produce energy-dense nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery cells designated for leading automotive brands, notably Toyota. These NMC cells will be critical for powering the upcoming 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which will be assembled in Kentucky, significantly contributing to the strengthening of the U.S. supply chain for next-generation electric vehicles.

During the grand opening, notable attendees included Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and representatives from the Korean Consulate, highlighting the importance of this venture for both local and international stakeholders. Governor Whitmer celebrated the opening as a crucial step towards creating good-paying jobs, projecting the facility to provide up to 1,700 new roles in the community.

“This project is part of our historic work to invest in clean energy and electric vehicle manufacturing, helping more working families thrive in Michigan,” stated Governor Whitmer, emphasizing the state's ongoing commitment to energy innovation and job creation.

Secretary Burghum remarked on the significance of domestic battery production in achieving energy independence and boosting American jobs. He pointed out that Michigan’s rich manufacturing history and skilled workforce positions it uniquely to lead these initiatives.

The success of the Lansing plant aligns with LG Energy Solution's broader strategy, where the company has committed more than $2 billion since 2022 to enhance its operations in Michigan. Current employment at the facility is approximately 900, with projections to reach 1,700 as production ramps up. This expansion will solidify LG Energy Solution's Michigan workforce to over 3,300 across multiple locations, including the existing facility in Holland.

In light of the growing energy demands across the nation, the batteries manufactured at the Lansing plant will play a pivotal role in assisting utilities like DTE Energy to manage energy distribution effectively. The local focus on energy storage batteries exemplifies the company's commitment to sustainable energy solutions in the North American market.

By the conclusion of 2026, LG Energy Solution aims to achieve a remarkable milestone: more than 50 GWh of total LFP cell-making capacity across its North American operations. This will greatly contribute to fulfilling the burgeoning requirements for energy storage and electric vehicles, ultimately reducing reliance on foreign supply chains and strengthening economic resilience.
