Winterberry Group Unveils Research on Unified Marketing Measurement's Importance for Marketers

Analysis of Unified Marketing Measurement

On September 30, 2026, Winterberry Group released an insightful report titled "The State of Unified Marketing Measurement," supported by Lifesight. The study investigates how enterprise-level marketers gauge, attribute, and optimize their marketing expenditures amidst a fragmented media environment. In recent years, marketers have increasingly emphasized the integration of measurement strategies across different media channels. However, the adoption of Unified Marketing Measurement (UMM)—which combines various measurement techniques such as causal marketing mix modeling, geo-based incrementality testing, and incrementality-adjusted attribution—remains limited.

According to the report, a staggering 83% of respondents from Winterberry's survey, composed of enterprise marketers, view UMM as a priority for their organizations. Despite this recognition, only 9% express confidence in executing UMM effectively. "We see a significant gap between what marketers aspire to achieve and their current capabilities," remarked Jonathan Margulies, managing partner at Winterberry Group. This gap indicates that while brands are striving to connect measurement across diverse channels, the practical application of UMM is still in its infancy.

Another noteworthy observation is the shift away from reliance on first- and last-click attribution models. Today's marketers are favoring more nuanced methods: 71% employ marketing mix modeling, while 62% have adopted data-driven attribution, and 52% utilize incrementality testing. Yet, these isolated measurement techniques have not translated into a comprehensive understanding of overall media performance. "The challenge now is transitioning from merely measuring individual channels to optimizing their interactions within a cohesive media strategy," Margulies commented.

Complex Measurement Landscape

The complexity of measurement has not deterred marketers from seeking technological and external support to enhance their understanding of performance. A meager 18% of professionals feel they have the necessary personnel and expertise deployed effectively to meet measurement goals. In comparison, 74% express a need for third-party assistance, particularly in interpreting data and translating it into actionable insights. Consequently, 93% of marketers are using measurement platforms built by media companies to assess performance metrics of their channels and campaigns.

Tobin Thomas, CEO of Lifesight, pointed out, "Marketers are grappling with discrepancies between numbers generated by different systems, and unified measurement aims to provide a cohesive and independent view to drive better planning from both marketing and finance angles." The role of artificial intelligence in measurement is also becoming more pronounced. Although 79% of brands are leveraging AI to manage various measurement tasks, a modest 16% consider it central to their strategies, primarily due to challenges surrounding data quality.

The Path Forward

Looking ahead, the findings underscore the pressing need for marketers to enhance their measurement frameworks. The report captures insights from a survey conducted with 121 enterprise-class brand marketers at the VP level and above during the summer of 2026, illustrating a clear picture of current measurement practices and the challenges faced in a constantly evolving digital landscape.

As companies move forward, it will be essential for them to refine their focus on integrated measurement strategies that foster collaboration between marketing and financial disciplines. The report highlights a critical opportunity to bridge existing gaps in capabilities, driving optimized marketing efforts that yield incremental value across diverse channels.
