Hanon Systems Achieves Landmark Recognition with Third PACE Award
On April 15, 2025, Hanon Systems was honored with the 2025 PACE Award for its visible-light LED photocatalyst technology, marking the third time the company has received this prestigious recognition. The award ceremony held in Detroit underscored Hanon Systems’ commitment to pioneering advancements within the automotive industry. This win places Hanon as the first Korean supplier to earn this accolade, which is a testament to the company's innovative prowess.
Hanon’s latest award-winning technology focuses on improving the air quality inside vehicles through enhanced antimicrobial and deodorization capabilities in its HVAC systems. External tests revealed that this innovative solution achieves an impressive 98.5% efficiency in virus sterilization and a remarkable 97.5% deodorization rate regarding harmful gases and odors originating from both inside and outside the vehicle. This performance is significantly better than previous technologies, which only managed 66.1% virus sterilization and 35% deodorization.
Unlike traditional ionizers, the visible-light LED photocatalyst operates without generating harmful electromagnetic waves or ozone, ensuring a safer driving environment while still effectively combating odors and microorganisms. This technology is semi-permanent and does not require replacement, which adds to its appeal and practicality for manufacturers and consumers alike.
As a marker of innovation, this technology is currently featured in Hyundai's flagship sedan, the G90, and is being considered for broader application by multiple global OEMs. The award highlights Hanon Systems’ ongoing commitment to developing advanced technologies that not only enhance comfort but also prioritize well-being in the driving experience.
The PACE Awards, established 30 years ago, are organized by Automotive News to celebrate significant technological advances within the global automotive sector. Each year, the program acknowledges companies that are making an impact through innovation, and the 2025 awards highlighted those who are shaping the future of the industry.
Jamie Butters, executive editor of Automotive News, remarked on the significance of the award, stating, “For 30 years, the PACE program has celebrated cutting-edge innovations that have shaped the automotive industry on a global level. The companies on this year's list have pioneered significant technologies that will continue to propel the industry forward.”
Hanon Systems’ President and CEO, Mr. Soo-Il Lee, expressed his pride in the recognition, indicating that this accolade reflects the company’s unique technological competitive edge. He reaffirmed the company’s focus on developing solutions that improve driving comfort and also address well-being, ultimately aiming to redefine the experience of driving.
Hanon Systems has previously won the PACE Award in 2007 for its wavy blade fan and shroud, marking its entry as the first Asian supplier to be recognized. The company won again in 2013 for its innovative metal seal fitting, showcasing its ongoing commitment to research and development in the thermal energy management field.
Founded in 1986, Hanon Systems has solidified its position as a leader in thermal management solutions worldwide. Now a subsidiary of Hankook & Company Group, the company’s portfolio includes a comprehensive range of HVAC solutions, powertrain cooling systems, and electronic components. With operations spanning 50 manufacturing sites across 21 countries, Hanon Systems employs over 20,000 individuals dedicated to driving innovation in automotive technology.
With the consistent evolution of automotive technology, Hanon Systems continues to explore avenues that further enhance user experience through innovative solutions and a focus on health and safety, ensuring that their contributions will have lasting impacts on the automotive industry for years to come.
