EcoVadis and Watershed Unite to Tackle Scope 3 Data Challenges in Sustainability

EcoVadis and Watershed Join Forces to Bridge the Scope 3 Data Gap

In a significant move towards enhancing sustainability practices in the corporate world, EcoVadis has unveiled a strategic partnership with Watershed. This collaboration is centered around the imperative goal of addressing the notorious Scope 3 data gap, a persistent challenge that many organizations face when attempting to measure and manage their carbon emissions.

Understanding Scope 3 Emissions

Scope 3 emissions encompass a wide range of indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company's value chain, encompassing everything from the production of materials to the end-of-life treatment of sold products. Unlike Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which are directly produced by a company’s own operations, Scope 3 emissions can be difficult to quantify and track due to their complex nature. This lack of reliable data makes it challenging for organizations to develop effective decarbonization strategies.

The Power of Partnership

EcoVadis aims to change the narrative around Scope 3 emissions through its advanced Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculator, which utilizes supplier-specific data to provide more accurate emissions metrics. The partnership with Watershed enhances this offering by integrating a sophisticated sustainability AI platform designed to centralize, model, and analyze climate data. This not only streamlines the data collection process but also ensures that the information is audit-ready, allowing organizations to meet both voluntary and regulatory reporting requirements.

Dexter Galvin, Senior Vice President of Climate at EcoVadis, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Unlocking the next generation of Scope 3 emissions reduction requires a level of carbon data reliability that has historically been missing from the market.” By combining their resources, EcoVadis and Watershed aim to provide organizations with a more transparent view of their supply chain impacts, allowing for informed sourcing decisions and measurable reductions over time.

A New Era of Data Reliability

The integration of EcoVadis's primary data engine, which facilitates direct supplier reporting and collaborative efforts, alongside Watershed's advanced climate data analytics, provides organizations with the high-quality insights needed to move beyond traditional estimates. With a four-level reliability framework, EcoVadis offers immediate insights into data quality, ensuring that businesses can trust the metrics they are working with.

David Ban, Head of Data Partnerships at Watershed, remarked, “We’re thrilled to see our customers adopting sophisticated Scope 3 measurement tools. Our partnership with EcoVadis exemplifies our belief that actionable, accurate, and accessible supplier-specific data is at the core of driving real decarbonization.”

This partnership not only aims to improve the quality of carbon data but also fosters a more interconnected carbon ecosystem. By collaborating with other established partners such as Sweep and Normative, EcoVadis is committed to driving precision and transparency in carbon reporting.

Launch of the EcoVadis Product Carbon Footprint Calculator

Complementing their partnership with Watershed, EcoVadis launched the PCF Calculator. This innovative tool allows suppliers across various sectors to efficiently calculate their product-level carbon footprints. With coverage that spans 12 critical industrial sectors, including plastics, metals, electronics, and machinery, the PCF Calculator is designed to simplify carbon accounting for businesses of all sizes, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

To address the reporting trust gap, EcoVadis assigns one of four Carbon Data Reliability Levels to all reported Scope 1-3 metrics in their Carbon Data Network. By validating these metrics against supporting evidence and conducting thorough checks, businesses can gain clarity on data suitability for carbon accounting purposes.

Conclusion

The collaboration between EcoVadis and Watershed marks a pivotal step in the journey towards achieving true sustainability in business operations. By enhancing data accuracy and fostering transparency within supply chains, these organizations are equipping businesses with the tools they need to make informed decisions regarding their carbon emissions strategies. This initiative not only signifies progress in the fight against climate change but also underscores the importance of reliable data in shaping a sustainable future.
