Withings Launches U-Scan: A Game-Changer in Home Urine Analysis

Withings has officially launched its latest innovation, the U-Scan, after over seven years of research and development. This groundbreaking device is designed to provide users with quick and accurate urine analysis right from the comfort of their homes, transforming a daily routine into a powerful tool for health monitoring.

A Compact Laboratory in Your Toilet

The U-Scan can be described as a miniaturized urine analysis laboratory that integrates advanced technologies such as chemistry, optics, and artificial intelligence into a toilet setting. This innovation allows users to understand their health better without altering their daily habits. According to Eric Carreel, Founder and Chairman of Withings, the inspiration for U-Scan stemmed from the understanding that urine can reveal a wealth of health insights. The key challenge was to make this analysis accessible and easy to use.

Continuous Monitoring of Health Metrics

Urine is abundant in health information, containing more than 3,000 metabolites that reflect our hydration, nutrition, hormonal balance, and overall metabolism. Traditionally, urine analysis has been limited to laboratory settings, resulting in underutilization of this valuable data. However, the U-Scan changes this by integrating laboratory science directly into the bathroom.

How U-Scan Works

The U-Scan automatically collects urine samples using a highly sensitive thermal sensor embedded within the toilet. It draws a small sample and analyzes it on-site using miniaturized biochemical sensors contained in a replaceable cartridge. Within minutes, results are processed and sent via Wi-Fi to the Withings app, where users can monitor vital information regarding hydration, nutritional balance, calcium trends, and more.

Each cartridge is designed to last about three months and can be easily replaced. Additionally, U-Scan includes a complimentary charging and cleaning station that prepares the reader within three hours, ensuring hygiene and functionality.

Two Distinct Versions: Nutrio and Calci

U-Scan Nutrio

This variant helps users master their body's nutritional responses by measuring four key urinary biomarkers:
  • - Bio-Acidity (urinary pH): Monitors acid-base balance, which can indicate metabolic strain or dietary issues.
  • - HydroStatus (specific gravity): Assesses whether fluid intake meets metabolic demands.
  • - Ketones: Indicates fat-burning status, important for weight management and low-carb diets.
  • - Vitamin C: Reflects dietary adequacy and antioxidant protection.

Christelle Barakat, Director of Chemistry Research at Withings, emphasized how U-Scan Nutrio brings these invisible yet crucial metrics into daily life, continuously offering insights into one's health status.

U-Scan Calci

The second version, U-Scan Calci, focuses on proactive kidney health management, crucial for preventing painful kidney stones that affect one in ten adults globally. This device tracks urinary calcium levels, pH, and specific gravity, providing regular insights that can help users manage their renal health effectively.

More specifically:
  • - Calcium Levels: Monitors calcium excretion to identify trends that may lead to stone formation.
  • - Bio-Acidity: Detects urine acidity variations that influence mineral crystallization.
  • - HydroStatus: Encourages optimal hydration to prevent mineral aggregation.

Pricing and Availability

U-Scan Nutrio and U-Scan Calci are now available in Europe and the United States, starting from October 29, 2025, on the Withings website. Users can choose from several subscription plans tailored to their analysis needs. For example, the Proactive Plan costs $379.95 and includes necessary accessories, while the Intensive Plan is priced at $449.96 for more frequent analyses.

Withings+ - Your Personal Health Assistant

Purchasing the U-Scan also grants access to Withings+, a premium app experience featuring personalized health resources. Users receive a free nutrition consultation with a registered dietitian and can leverage AI-driven features to contextualize their biomarker trends.

Withings has established itself as a leader in connected health, empowering over 15 million users and collaborating with established research institutions.
