Uzbekistan's First Digital Substation
On February 21, 2025, Uzbekistan achieved a significant milestone in its energy sector by inaugurating the Zafarabad digital substation, a state-of-the-art facility designed to transform the region's electricity supply. Built by
Shanghai Electric, the 220-kV substation is the first of its kind in the nation and spans a massive 75,000 square meters in the Jizzakh province.
Background on Energy Challenges
Uzbekistan has historically grappled with chronic gas and electricity shortages, which have forced many residents to rely on traditional stoves and makeshift heating solutions to cope with brutal winter months. With the newly constructed digital substation, there is great hope for an improved power supply in eastern Uzbekistan. Its completion will significantly bolster energy distribution and enhance service reliability for both local industries and residential areas.
Capacity and Technology Enhancements
The Zafarabad facility boasts an impressive capacity of 400 megawatts, effectively doubling the region's electricity supply. Equipped with two 250-MVA autotransformers, it steps down voltage from the primary grid of 220 kV to 110 kV, ensuring high-quality electricity reaches the local distribution network to meet rising demands.
The project stands out for its integration of cutting-edge technology to optimize performance and safety. It features a fully digitized system that streamlines operations inside the substation. Advanced monitoring and data collection tools mitigate the need for on-site maintenance personnel while enhancing operational reliability. Should any interruptions occur, the system's real-time monitoring capabilities allow for swift error detection and load adjustment.
A Testament to Teamwork
Shanghai Electric was awarded the project in October 2021, taking on the formidable challenge of introducing the first digital substation in Uzbekistan. The project team proficiently navigated various hurdles, including multilingual communication barriers, technological troubleshooting, and collaboration between Chinese and Uzbek teams. Through meticulous planning and training sessions, they coordinated activities effectively, ensuring the timely completion of the project while achieving a commendable three years of accident-free operations during the construction phase.
Looking Ahead
With the Zafarabad substation now operational, the expectations are high for improving energy security in Uzbekistan. This initiative not only enhances the functionality of the country's electrical grid but also symbolizes a broader shift towards modernization in the region's energy sector.
