Lummus Technology and KMG Forge Partnership for Digital Excellence in Kazakhstan

Lummus and KMG's Groundbreaking Collaboration

Lummus Technology, a leading global provider of process technologies, has recently made headlines with its new partnership with KazMunayGas (KMG), Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company. This collaboration aims to establish a Digital Center of Excellence in Atyrau, a significant move designed to enhance the country’s petrochemical sector through advanced technological training and innovation.

The Vision Behind the Agreement

On October 16, 2025, the two companies signed a preliminary agreement that marks a pivotal moment in Kazakhstan's industrial landscape. Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, expressed great enthusiasm about this initiative, emphasizing that it is set to strengthen their ongoing collaboration. The idea is to merge Lummus’ technological prowess with KMG’s regional leadership, resulting in innovative solutions that not only enhance operational efficiency but also cultivate a skilled workforce in Kazakhstan.

KMG Chairman Askhat Khassenov also spoke to the importance of this venture, stating, "Digitalization is key to achieving safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations." This partnership aims to create a resilient petrochemical industry that aligns with Kazakhstan's long-term economic objectives.

What the Digital Center Will Offer

The Digital Center of Excellence will mirror existing centers set up by Lummus in the U.S. and India, tailored to meet the specific needs of Kazakhstan’s market. The facility will focus on technology transfers and workforce development, providing tailored training programs that enhance technical skills, bolster industrial safety protocols, and drive operational excellence.

One innovation being introduced is the Operator Skills Sharpening Simulator (O3S™), an immersive training system that provides operators, engineers, and technology specialists with a simulated experience of navigating real-world petrochemical environments. This hands-on approach aims to refine the skill sets necessary to manage advanced, technology-driven plants effectively.

Strengthening Kazakhstan's Petrochemical Sector

Lummus Technology has already established a strong footprint in Kazakhstan, being the technology licensor for major projects such as the Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc. (KPI). The company’s proprietary technology is utilized in various ventures, including propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene production. Additionally, Lummus is set to license its ethylene technology to Silleno LLP, which is undertaking the construction of Kazakhstan's first polyethylene plant, alongside other technologies for Butadiene LLP, responsible for the nation's inaugural synthetic rubber production facility.

These projects signify a larger trend of modernization within Kazakhstan's petrochemical sector, fueled by digital transformation and enhanced domestic capabilities.

A Sustainable Future

As governments and industries globally pivot towards sustainability, the partnership between Lummus and KMG stands out as a proactive step towards achieving a low-carbon and sustainable future in Kazakhstan. By integrating advanced digital technologies and focusing on workforce development, both companies are committed to not only addressing the challenges of the present but also shaping a positive trajectory for the future of Kazakhstan's petrochemical industry.

With this groundbreaking digital center, Lummus and KMG are leading the charge in creating a new era of efficiency, safety, and innovation in the petrochemical landscape of Kazakhstan. The commitment to fostering a skilled workforce and leveraging state-of-the-art technology is set to make a substantial impact not only on local economies but also on global energy sustainability efforts.
