Toyo Seikan's CAN-PANY Wins Good Design Award 2025 Best 100 Recognition

CAN-PANY: Revolutionizing Urban Bottling

Toyo Seikan K.K., a subsidiary of Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, has recently achieved remarkable recognition for its urban bottling facility known as CAN-PANY. Located in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, this innovative facility specializes in producing and bottling beverages while actively promoting collaboration with local chefs, bartenders, and artists. In 2025, CAN-PANY was selected as one of the Good Design Award’s Best 100 projects, celebrating designs that pave the way for the future and drive innovation.

Overview of CAN-PANY

CAN-PANY officially opened its doors in May 2023 and is designed to cater to small batch production, non-alcoholic beverages, and collaboration. Each step of the process—from recipe development, raw material processing, and production, to bottling, shipping, and sales—is integrated within its walls, allowing for an unparalleled level of transparency and sanitation. The transparent structure of the facility invites the public to observe the entire production process, signaling a refreshing shift in how urban manufacturing is perceived.

Beverages produced at CAN-PANY include seasonal carbonated drinks and creatively crafted mocktails that highlight unique recipes. By merging expertise across various fields, including agriculture and culinary arts, CAN-PANY enhances the local beverage landscape through original products and collaborative creations.

The name 'CAN-PANY' is a coined term that means 'filling companions'—a title that reflects the spirit of community and cooperation embodied within the facility. This initiative stands as a beacon of innovation, marrying the act of production with urban lifestyle, and encouraging locals to redefine their engagement with everyday beverages.

The Vision Behind CAN-PANY

Mitosaya, the company operating CAN-PANY, emphasizes utilizing locally grown fruits and herbs from their own farms in Otaki Town, Chiba. They employ fermentation and distillation techniques to create unique products. Toyo Seikan recognized Mitosaya's commitment to fostering a new bottling culture and provided comprehensive support through its service known as Future Foods Labo. This initiative focuses on small-batch product development and technical assistance, including the introduction of bottling technology.

Toyo Seikan aims to leverage its long-established expertise in packaging to explore new markets and applications for beverages, solidifying its support for venues like CAN-PANY.

Judging Panel Review

According to the Good Design Award judging committee, CAN-PANY is celebrated as an open beverage factory that dispels the conventional perception of closed manufacturing environments. By enhancing transparency and instilling trust within the community, CAN-PANY presents a new model for urban production. The integrated workflow—from manufacturing to packing and selling—allows visitors to experience firsthand the story behind the beverages, further bridging the gap between creators and consumers.

Utilizing transparent polycarbonate in its architectural design, CAN-PANY dissolves the boundaries typically found in manufacturing spaces, achieving an admirable balance of function and aesthetics, while strongly aligning with the brand's identity and mission.

Overall, this innovative project is a pioneering example of a co-creative industrial space, demonstrating significant potential for future expansion and community engagement.
