Empowering Future Generations: Setagaya's Business Succession Initiative Relay 2023

Relay Business Succession Campaign in Setagaya

This year marks the fourth iteration of a powerful initiative aimed at connecting future generations to local businesses in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. The Open Name Business Succession platform, Relay, in collaboration with the Setagaya Ward government, is spearheading a campaign to encourage community members to share information about local shops, flavors, and skills they wish to see preserved for future generations.

Understanding the Purpose

As one of the largest municipalities in Tokyo, Setagaya Ward is home to approximately 920,000 residents. Known for its unique blend of urban vibrancy and natural beauty, this area has become a popular destination for both young people and families. However, recent surveys have highlighted that 25.4% of local businesses struggle with a critical issue: the lack of suitable successors. As more business owners approach retirement, the risk of businesses closing due to a lack of successors remains a growing concern that could lead to severe economic consequences for the community.

The Relay initiative aims to tackle the shortage of successors head-on to preserve local jobs and the invaluable knowledge and expertise held by small businesses. By fostering greater awareness and engagement, the goal is to ensure the continuity of cherished local businesses, which are integral to the community’s fabric.

Campaign Details

The “Setagaya Future Shops Submission Campaign” invites residents from Setagaya to share their thoughts on local businesses they believe should be preserved. This not only raises awareness about these establishments but also generates emotional connections to encourage future caretakers. Previous iterations of this campaign have received overwhelmingly positive responses, with over 900 submissions in the past three years.

Exciting Rewards

Participants in this year’s campaign have the chance to win exciting prizes. One hundred entries selected at random will receive 500 yen worth of Setagaya Pay coins, redeemable through the local cashless payment app launched by the Setagaya Ward commercial association. This initiative not only incentivizes community engagement but also boosts the use of cashless transactions, contributing to a modernized local economy.

How to Participate

Residents can submit their nominations through the campaign’s online form, which will be available from July 1 to August 31, 2026. Winners will be chosen in a fair lottery, with notifications sent out in September 2026. It’s essential to adhere to the campaign guidelines to avoid disqualification due to issues such as inappropriate content or lack of consent from legal guardians for participants under 18.

Community Collaboration

Relay is committed to evolving alongside challenges and forging partnerships with local governments, financial institutions, and support organizations. This collaboration aims to broaden the selection of business succession options available to communities, ultimately enhancing local resilience and creativity.

About Relay

Since its inception in January 2020, Relay has distinguished itself by offering an innovative matching service for business succession, leveraging an open-name method that allows business owners to share their stories and motivations with potential successors. The platform has successfully facilitated approximately 890 successor searches and recorded 180 successful matches over the years. Notably, it has maintained the highest transaction and success rates in Japan for five consecutive years, underscoring its effectiveness in addressing succession issues.

In conclusion, the “Setagaya Future Shops Submission Campaign” represents not just a local initiative, but a profound opportunity for community empowerment, aiming to secure the legacy of small businesses and the cherished traditions they uphold. Join the movement in ensuring a vibrant future for Setagaya’s local marketplace!
