Northern Sun Energy Initiates Solar and Battery Project for Prysmian Manufacturing in Illinois

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Northern Sun Energy has announced the commencement of its first project in Illinois, marking its expansion into the Midwest region. The initiative, which is set to construct a 7.5 MWp fixed tilt solar array integrated with 1,050 kVA of battery storage, aims to provide on-site power to Prysmian’s manufacturing plant located in Du Quoin, Illinois.

Innovative Energy Solutions for Industry

The Prysmian manufacturing facility specializes in producing copper medium voltage cables, which are essential for renewable energy applications including solar and wind power. By utilizing clean energy from the newly installed solar system, the plant aims to decrease its dependency on the conventional power grid, paving the way for a more sustainable operational model.

This groundbreaking project is being implemented in collaboration with PowerFlex, a developer focused on distributed clean energy solutions. Notably, the project will feature a Tesla Megapack 2XL battery storage system and utilize over 10,800 solar modules, making it one of the very few distributed energy projects aimed explicitly at serving a major industrial operation while reducing strain on the local electrical grid.

Community and Environmental Impact

In addition to enhancing energy efficiency, the project is expected to generate local employment opportunities in the Du Quoin area, fostering economic growth while supporting community development. Scott Pfaff, Vice President of Construction Operations at Northern Sun Energy, remarked, “This project is a major milestone for our team as we enter the MISO market. Our collaboration with Prysmian and PowerFlex reflects our commitment to delivering effective and well-engineered clean energy systems.”

The energy generated from this plant not only aids in reducing emissions but also supports Prysmian’s goals of cutting Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90%. These efforts align with the company’s broader ambition of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. Furthermore, by participating in Illinois’ Shines program, Prysmian stands to gain significant renewable energy credits (RECs), promoting further investments in green technology.

Paul Furtado, Chief Operating Officer at Prysmian North America, expressed pride in partnering with Northern Sun Energy and PowerFlex. He noted that “the solar farm at our Du Quoin facility will generate 50% of the energy required for production, allowing us to drastically reduce our overall power consumption while making critical improvements to our grid in an environmentally friendly manner.”

Looking Ahead

The interconnection of this solar and energy storage system is scheduled for completion by December 2025. As the demand for renewable energy continues to escalate, projects like this one highlight the crucial steps industries are taking toward sustainable energy practices. Northern Sun Energy, with its extensive expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction services, is poised to play a significant role in the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources.
