Forager Project Unveils The Cashew Project



Forager Project, a prominent name in the realm of organic dairy-free foods, has recently debuted The Cashew Project—a groundbreaking multi-year initiative that stands to transform the lives of cashew farmers in Côte d'Ivoire. This ambitious program emphasizes enhancing organic farming practices, financial literacy, and sustainable agriculture—all crucial elements to uplift the local farming community.

Supporting Sustainable Practices



The Cashew Project centers on practical training programs designed to empower farmers, not only economically but also through environmental stewardship. By adopting Organic farming methods, Forager Project aims to improve the livelihoods of these farmers while promoting cash crop sustainability. One of the key highlights of this initiative is its effort to adapt to climate change, an urgent challenge for agriculture globally. According to Maude Manoukian, the chief community officer at Forager Project, cultivating relationships with farming communities is integral to the future of food. The focus on the cashew sector is poignant, given that the trees flourish in conditions unsuitable for dairy farming in the U.S.

The Initiative’s Core Elements



As part of this initiative, Forager has made tangible investments such as funding a warehouse and drying yard in Djébonoua. This infrastructure will not only protect the harvests from adverse weather but also boost income for local growers. Through the completion of comprehensive training, the objective is to elevate the quality of cashews produced while ensuring farmers earn better wages.

Additionally, the incorporation of climate-smart agriculture practices will see cashew trees planted in degraded areas to support reforestation and promote biodiversity. Intercropping with traditional staples like cassava will also help strengthen the ecosystem while improving farmers' nutritional security.

Empowering Female Farmers



The project actively seeks to dismantle traditional gender roles within the agricultural landscape. Historically, farming in Côte d'Ivoire has been male-dominated, leaving women at a disadvantage. This multi-faceted approach involves training over 1,000 women across 18 villages, fostering independence through vocational skills. Supported by a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) program, women are expected to secure financial independence over time, with full program completion anticipated by 2026.

Over the next two years, The Cashew Project aims to touch the lives of more than 10,000 farmers, with half of them being women and young individuals. By elevating the quality of cashew products, Forager Project aims to meet its high standards while reducing its reliance on traditional dairy farming.
