Commemorating 40 Years of AIDS Walk Delaware
The AIDS Walk Delaware is set to celebrate an impressive milestone: 40 years of unwavering commitment to raising awareness about HIV and supporting those affected by it. Scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, this year’s event will take place at Brandywine Park in Wilmington and the Bandstand in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Participants can check in starting at 8:30 a.m. with the walk commencing at 10:00 a.m.
Co-hosted by AIDS Delaware and the Delaware HIV Consortium, this annual event has been a unifying force bringing together individuals, families, healthcare providers, advocates, and volunteers for four decades. The AIDS Walk not only serves as a critical fundraiser for HIV-related services but also acts as a powerful public reminder that those living with HIV are never alone.
Domenic Merendino, Executive Director of AIDS Delaware, expressed the significance of this anniversary: "For 40 years, this walk has represented the very best of Delaware. It honors lives we’ve lost, celebrates our achievements, and underscores the ongoing fight against HIV."
The 40th anniversary occurs during a pivotal period in the fight against HIV, characterized by significant medical advancements in treatment and prevention. Despite these strides, there remains a critical demand for services, particularly as funding continues to face uncertainties. Tyler Berl, Executive Director of the Delaware HIV Consortium, highlighted the importance of community involvement: "As one of the oldest HIV walks in the U.S. reaches its 40th year, we are reminded that this movement is built on community support. This anniversary is not only about reflecting on the past but ensuring that individuals living with HIV continue to receive the care and support they urgently need."
Funds raised through this year's walk will support a variety of vital services in Delaware, including prevention education, free HIV testing, linkage to care, transportation assistance, and food support. These mechanisms ensure individuals living with HIV can access the comprehensive care they deserve.
