One Night Only: Experience the Immersive Akasaka AKANE Night at Hikawa Shrine

A Night Enveloped in Akane Color

Prepare for an unforgettable experience on June 15, 2026, as UZETSU Inc. presents "Akasaka AKANE Night" at the historic Hikawa Shrine in Akasaka, Tokyo. This one-night-only immersive event, supported by the Akasaka Creative Foundation, transforms the shrine's enchanting grounds into a stunning exhibition celebrating the color "Akane."

The Allure of Akane

The Hikawa Shrine boasts over a thousand years of history, and as the sun sets, its grounds will be bathed in a mesmerizing crimson hue. The event features a three-part structure, with an entrance area lined with candles inviting visitors to step into a world defined by the deep red of Akane. Attendees will have the chance to savor themed beverages—both alcoholic and non-alcoholic—while enjoying impressive performances from dancers and taiko drummers in a central performance area adorned with Akane-inspired sculptures.

As you walk down the crimson-lit path with a drink in hand, let the harmony of laser lights, stunning illuminations, and the powerful beats of taiko drums envelop you. This is an invitation to immerse yourself in a realm where reality blurs, allowing you to experience the magic of a sunset transforming into something extraordinary.

The Significance of Akane

The centerpiece of the evening is the traditional Japanese dye plant, Akane (Rubia akane). Known as one of the oldest dye sources in Japan, the Akane plant has a rich history, having been utilized since the 2nd or 3rd century to dye textiles. Not only does its vivid crimson render beautiful fabrics, but it is also linked to significant historical artifacts, including silks offered by ancient figures and textiles preserved in sacred sites.

The poet from the Man’yōshū era, invoking the essence of Akane, penned the lines that reflect longing: "Akane sasu, Murayana yukukoto, Shitakiyotsu, Nonarashi mi no, Kimi ga sode furu." This poetic legacy ties Akane deeply to the place—the name Akasaka is believed to derive from 'Akane-zaka' or Red Root Hill, where once vibrant Akane plants flourished. Sadly, urbanization has led to the disappearance of these plants from the area, but now, they are being revived within the grounds of Hikawa Shrine.

An Ensemble of Artists

The event is not only a visual feast but also a collaborative project featuring some of Japan's most talented creators. The laser shows are designed by GENDAI, known for their performances in prestigious international venues like "America's Got Talent" and the "Edinburgh Festival Fringe." The visual design will involve acclaimed artists such as Masaru Uemura, Yoh Murata, Yoshihito Hasuge, and Jo Takahashi. Meanwhile, Marika, a top contortionist celebrated for her remarkable performances, will entertain in the bar area. Costume designer Kazusa Horikawa, with an impressive background in fashion for renowned artists, will also contribute to the event.
