Nippon Express Selected as Freight Agent for Tokyo's SAF Initiative
On May 29, 2024, Nippon Express Holdings (CEO: Tomoharu Horikiri), through its group company Nippon Express Co., Ltd. (President: Shinjiro Takezoe), proudly announced its selection as a freight agent for Tokyo's grant project aimed at promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in air cargo transportation related to corporate Scope 3 emissions. This marks the second consecutive year for Nippon Express to receive this recognition.
The project, officially titled "SAF Utilization Promotion Project for Air Cargo Transport to Address Corporate Scope 3 Emissions," is designed to support companies in reducing CO2 emissions across their entire supply chains. Through this initiative, Tokyo will subsidize the additional costs incurred when using SAF via selected freight agents for air cargo transport until March 2026.
Nippon Express, part of the NX Group, views the expansion of SAF utilization as a key focus area in its sustainability efforts. The company is actively involved in various initiatives, including the introduction of the "NX-GREEN SAF Program" and participation in practical projects related to Scope 3 environmental value transactions. In the fiscal year 2024, Nippon Express served as a freight agent for many customers, contributing to the dissemination of SAF. For fiscal year 2025, the company aims to create an environment that encourages even more customers to utilize SAF, thereby further supporting CO2 reductions in supply chains.
In line with its commitment to combat climate change, NX Group aims to reduce its total CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 50% compared to 2013 levels by 2030. In May 2023, the group submitted a commitment letter to obtain certification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Furthermore, its long-term goal is to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality across all scopes (1, 2, and 3) by 2050. NX Group is dedicated to sharing its sustainability vision with stakeholders and actively promoting measures to address key issues surrounding environmental conservation.

Background on Scope 3 Emissions
According to international standards set by the GHG Protocol, co-hosted by WRI (World Resources Institute) and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), corporate CO2 emissions are categorized into three scopes:
- - Scope 1: Direct CO2 emissions from a company's operational activities.
- - Scope 2: CO2 emissions resulting from the consumption of purchased electricity and other energy sources.
- - Scope 3: Indirect CO2 emissions from the company's activities, related to product transport, employee commuting, and business travel.
