Qatar Foundation's Sports Dialogue: A Global Perspective on Social Development
In a significant gathering of international leaders, the
Qatar Foundation recently organized a three-day dialogue at Wilton Park, England, focusing on the vital role of sports in promoting social development and empowerment, particularly for women and girls. This event united experts from various sectors including government, policy, and sports, to form a collective vision that translates the potential of sports into actionable strategies.
The dialogue, themed
"Sports for Development in the Global South," aimed to dismantle the systemic barriers that limit sports opportunities for women and girls. Motivated by
UN Resolution 59/17, which was backed by Qatar along with countries like Indonesia and Morocco, this initiative saw participation from leading organizations such as
Olympism365, Special Olympics, and Laureus Sport for Good.
Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports
Her Excellency
Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, highlighted the unmet needs of girls in the sports sector during her address. She emphasized that the challenges faced by young girls in accessing sports are distinct from those of their male counterparts. "Our goal is to close this gap practically, engaging women in designing facilities, offering tailored guidance, and backing it with scientific research which is often overlooked in women's sports," she said. This perspective is crucial in crafting policies that genuinely address these disparities.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the newly elected President of the
UN General Assembly, echoed this sentiment by stating that sports reshape societal views of girls and positively influence their self-perception. He remarked, "A girl who participates in team sports learns leadership, resilience, and the ability to recover from setbacks, skills that echo into the classroom and workplace."
A Roadmap for Future Actions
The collaborative efforts from Wilton Park and Qatar Foundation will now focus on developing a practical roadmap for systemic reform in policies, training, and infrastructure enhancement, with the goal of creating inclusive sports environments. This is crucial not only for girls' participation but for fostering a culture where girls and women can thrive in all areas of life.
Statistics and Impact
In the past two years, Qatar Foundation has championed inclusive sports initiatives, with over
70,000 women participating in adaptive sports activities at
Education City stadium. Their cornerstone initiative,
Circle In, actively supports sports development projects across ten countries, underlining the foundation’s commitment to gender-inclusive policies.
Conclusion
The Wilton Park dialogue underscores a critical movement towards harnessing the transformative power of sports for social good, particularly in the Global South. By addressing the barriers to women's participation in sports, the initiative not only aims to elevate the profile of female athletes but also fosters community development, ensuring that the benefits of sports reach every corner of society.
