Saab Unveils New HEAT 758 Anti-Tank Round for Carl-Gustaf Weapon
Saab Launches HEAT 758 Anti-Tank Ammunition
In an impressive live demonstration in May at Karlskoga, Sweden, Saab unveiled its innovative anti-tank round, named HEAT 758, for the well-known Carl-Gustaf weapon system. This advanced ammunition is specifically engineered to tackle modern threats posed by heavy armored vehicles equipped with Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA), a feature increasingly common on contemporary battlefields.
What's Special About HEAT 758?
The HEAT 758 is designed with a tandem warhead structure. This clever design incorporates an initial charge that effectively neutralizes the ERA placed on the exterior of an armored vehicle. Once this layer is disabled, the main charge of the round can penetrate through the vehicle’s core armor, which is capable of overcoming armor thicknesses of up to 700mm. Such penetration capability positions the HEAT 758 as a formidable solution against even the most heavily fortified targets.
Michael Höglund, the head of Saab’s Ground Combat unit, emphasized the importance of this launch, stating, "This round responds to the evolving challenges on the battlefield where explosive reactive armor has become a significant hurdle for standard munitions aimed at defeating armored vehicles. The HEAT 758 exemplifies Saab's commitment to developing increasingly effective weaponry while enhancing the safety of operators."
Technological Advancements in Action
One standout feature of the HEAT 758 is its integration with Saab's Firebolt technology. This innovative system allows the ammunition to communicate with the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon and the Fire Control Device 558 used for aiming, significantly reducing the workload on the operator. This intelligent connectivity further enhances the probability of hitting the target with the first shot, thereby increasing battlefield efficiency.
Currently, an undisclosed customer has placed orders for the HEAT 758, and production is actively underway. This new round reflects Saab's ongoing efforts to push technological boundaries and advance military capability.
