Dr. Allen emphasizes that harnessing the capabilities of personal smartphones will play a pivotal role in detecting behavioral signals linked to health outcomes. By analyzing data continually collected from individuals' smartphones, the project aims to offer proactive and tailored behavioral healthcare. The Large Health Behavior Model (LHBM) is designed to revolutionize the prediction and management of various mental health and substance use disorders by utilizing real-time behavioral data.

Collaborative Effort Across Institutions



This ambitious project is a collaborative effort involving prominent healthcare institutions such as Providence Health Services, MedStar Health, and the University of Washington. Together, they will leverage their expertise to ensure that the model is developed with a diverse participant base reflecting various geographic and demographic backgrounds. Researchers from the University of Washington's Paul Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering will particularly lead the computational modeling aspect, utilizing their wealth of knowledge in behavioral data science.

Ksana Health's EARS platform will be critical in this initiative, serving as the primary data collection mechanism to capture multi-modal behavioral data from both Android and iOS devices. This will facilitate a comprehensive understanding of behavioral patterns impacting mental health.

Ethical Considerations at the Forefront



Ethics will be a dominant theme throughout this project. A specific panel, known as the Lived Experience and Ethics Panel (LEEP), will include individuals with firsthand experience of mental health challenges, alongside experts in AI and bioethics. This unique committee will guide the development of the behavioral health model, ensuring that it aligns with ethical standards and addresses potential biases in the data used.

Dr. Allen notes the importance of involving those most affected by mental health issues: "It is crucial that the perspectives of individuals living with these conditions are integrated into this project's framework from the beginning." The guidance and insights from the LEEP will be incorporated at every stage, ensuring that their voices contribute significantly to the development process.

The project will proceed in phases, starting with proof-of-concept studies and expanding to include thousands of participants from different health systems.
