Okayama University's Exchange with Hirosaki University on J-PEAKS Initiatives Enhances Collaborative Research

Collaborative Research Initiatives between Okayama and Hirosaki Universities



On May 30, 2025, Okayama University engaged in a significant dialogue with Hirosaki University regarding the "Regional Core and Characteristic Research University Strengthening Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)." The exchange meeting aimed to further promote the J-PEAKS strategy for both institutions and was held in Okayama University’s Tsushima Campus at the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE).

The event was attended by a delegation from Hirosaki University, including Tokihiko Fujinami, Executive Director for General Affairs, alongside other staff involved in J-PEAKS and human resources. On the part of Okayama University, key figures such as Masanori Kawamoto, Principal Deputy Director of the Research and Innovation Co-Creation Organization, participated in the discussions.

Prior to the meeting, attendees toured the Co-Creation Innovation Lab to observe its design, which facilitates collaboration among various stakeholders towards innovation. Discussions included a depth of topics, focusing on the initiatives supporting research staff (URA) and employing strategies to achieve Okayama University's Long-term Vision 2050.

A critical topic highlighted was the difficulty in securing URA personnel compared to universities in major metropolitan areas. The participants shared information and strategized on various approaches to improve working conditions for URA staff, enhance their development, and optimize the certified URA system implemented at Okayama University.

President Yoshitomo Nasu of Okayama University addressed the gathering, emphasizing that J-PEAKS should not just be seen as a set of initiatives but as a vital tool for achieving the overarching goals of Okayama University's Long-term Vision 2050. Hirosaki University shared its current involvement in the COI Program, focusing on its strengths in big data and relationships with industry, contributing significantly to the J-PEAKS project.

The collaboration between the two universities yielded substantial insights into the challenges and opportunities facing their joint endeavors under the J-PEAKS initiative. Okayama University is eager to deepen its partnerships not only with the current J-PEAKS schools but also future partner institutions as part of a broader mission to foster innovation and elevate the nation’s research capabilities.

The two universities reaffirmed their commitment to a shared vision for the future, focusing on collaborative innovation that drives social change. Participants recognized the importance of continuous efforts and adaptive strategies to overcome the challenges of the research landscape and the dynamic nature of education and industry collaborations.
