Medical College of Wisconsin Launches New Center for Cancer Discovery to Revolutionize Research

New Center for Cancer Discovery Opens

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) celebrated a significant milestone today with the grand opening of the Center for Cancer Discovery (CCD), a cutting-edge research facility. This remarkable 161,000-square-foot center is poised to spearhead innovation and foster collaboration among researchers dedicated to combating cancer.

A New Era in Cancer Research

The CCD stands as the only research institution solely devoted to cancer studies in eastern Wisconsin. It symbolizes a commitment to addressing the complex challenges posed by cancer and aims to make strides in eradicating its burden on society.

John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, president and CEO of MCW, emphasized the importance of this new facility, stating, "The Medical College of Wisconsin's Center for Cancer Discovery reflects our priority to eradicate the cancer burden in Wisconsin... Today we celebrate not just the completion of a building, but also an opportunity to honor the dedicated scientists, clinicians, and educators who paved the way for this achievement."

Hosted in Milwaukee, the opening event saw over 100 attendees, including remarks fromGovernor Tony Evers, highlighting the significance of collaborative research efforts.

Funding and Collaboration

The Center for Cancer Discovery was made possible with partial funding from a $10 million state grant, contributing to the overall project cost of over $150 million. Previously, MCW's cancer research programs were spread across various locations, but this new facility consolidates them under one roof.

The design of the building promotes a culture of collaboration, an essential factor in advancing cancer research. The open-concept layout enables seamless interactions among cancer researchers, physician-scientists, and community stakeholders.

Transforming Cancer Treatment

The CCD is bound to change the landscape of cancer care not only through its innovative environment but also by enhancing patient outcomes. MCW prides itself on having the largest portfolio of active cancer clinical trials in Wisconsin, with over 220 ongoing studies.

Gustavo Leone, PhD, the director of the MCW Cancer Center, spoke regarding the future of cancer research within the new facility. "The cancer research happening at the Medical College of Wisconsin is bold, collaborative, and life-changing. Now, anchored by the Center for Cancer Discovery, hundreds of basic, clinical, and population scientists will be located together, allowing for innovative ideas to move from the bench to a patient's bedside and to the community faster," he stated.

This integrated approach, alongside innovative technology, is anticipated to dramatically improve life quality for cancer patients across Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the broader region.

In conclusion, the opening of the Center for Cancer Discovery signals a powerful push towards enhanced cancer research and treatment options, which aims to address one of the most pressing health challenges faced by society today.
