Welcome to the "Okinawa Spring Frescoball Festival"
The Japan Frescoball Association (JFBA) is excited to announce a special event organized by the local club "Hikage de Frescoball Okinawa." From now until April 11, every Saturday from 3 PM to 5 PM, the vibrant city of Naha will host the "Okinawa Spring Frescoball Festival" in the Shinto City Park. This festival is a fantastic opportunity for Okinawans, many of whom usually shy away from the sun, to engage in an outdoor sport that offers both fun and social interaction.
Frescoball is a unique beach sport that originated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, back in 1945. Unlike traditional sports that pit players against each other, frescoball promotes teamwork, requiring participants to work together in rallying the ball back and forth while aiming for accuracy and precision. This cooperative nature echoes the Okinawan cultural spirit of “Yui-maru,” which emphasizes mutual assistance and community support — the very essence of what makes frescoball exciting and enjoyable.
"Although frescoball is still a relatively new sport to many in Okinawa, I truly believe that once they experience the thrill of rallying with a partner and learning to anticipate each other's moves, they’ll appreciate the joy it brings," comments Mr. Kotera Isaku, the representative of the club. He encourages everyone, regardless of their fitness level, to come out and join.
Participants are not required to bring anything special as the club provides all necessary equipment, including rackets and balls. There's even a back net set up, making it user-friendly for newcomers or those who may lack confidence in athletic activities. Best of all, the event is free, and spontaneous participants are always welcome—just wear comfortable clothing and come ready to play.
The "Okinawa Spring Frescoball Festival" takes place every Saturday from March 21st to April 11th, and you are welcome to join anytime during the event. Should the weather turn unfavorable, the venue will shift to the underground plaza or the large hall at the Miyagi Community Center in Urasoe City.
