Japan Airlines Recognized in ESG Index for Fourth Year
Japan Airlines (JAL) has continued to show its commitment to sustainability by being selected for the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Asia Pacific Index for the fourth consecutive year on May 7, 2026. This index is a prominent measure of companies with strong ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) profiles within the Asia-Pacific region.
The Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices (DJBIC Indices) evaluate over 13,000 of the world's major corporations, assessing them on governance, economic, environmental, and social criteria. As a result, JAL has been recognized not only for its inclusion in the DJBIC Indices but also for its consistent presence in other important ESG stock indices such as the FTSE Blossom Japan Index and FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index. These recognitions emphasize the airline's dedication to sustainable business practices and corporate social responsibility.
During this year’s evaluation, JAL received top honors in the aviation sector for its comprehensive strategies in addressing climate change. Their commitment includes engaging a diverse range of stakeholders in initiatives aimed at decarbonization, effectively managing packaging materials to reduce single-use plastics, and prioritizing workforce development and health and safety. Furthermore, the airline was commended for its transparency in disclosing information in line with the recommendations of the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) and TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures), along with their proactive efforts in human rights and personal data protection.
JAL Group's guiding philosophy revolves around broadening happiness through connections beyond aviation, seeking to solve social issues while collaborating with stakeholders to forge a sustainable and wellness-oriented future. The airline emphasizes that their sustainable initiatives are an integral part of its growth strategy.
Noteworthy Initiatives for 2025
Domestic SAF Supply Chain Launched
In cooperation with stakeholders, JAL has initiated the supply chain for domestically produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) derived from used cooking oil, which has received ISCC CORSIA certification. This is a significant achievement as it marks the first time in Japan that SAF has been supplied to passenger flights, showcasing JAL's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
Innovative, Eco-Friendly Products
JAL is also actively working on minimizing the environmental impact of its operations. They have implemented the use of slippers made from 100% recycled materials and shoehorns derived entirely from biomass. These moves aim to reduce reliance on new petroleum-based disposable plastics while promoting the efficient use of limited resources.
Victory in Barista Competition for Employees with Disabilities
In a heartening development, a team of employees from JAL Sunlight, who are baristas, clinched victory at a barista competition intended for persons with disabilities. The airline’s initiative, known as 'SKY CAFE Kilatto,' aims to provide quality coffee service while fostering an environment that enables employees with disabilities to thrive and shine in their roles.
Look Ahead
As JAL continues to enhance its sustainability approach and engage in meaningful corporate practices, it is making strides in how businesses can contribute positively to society and the environment. The combination of these initiatives not only contributes to JAL’s corporate responsibility but also sets a benchmark for other companies in the aviation sector.
