Celebrating 15 Years of Collaboration: The Exhibition of Anne Vasko and Toshiyuki Fukuda

After a remarkable 15 years of collaboration, the beloved Finnish picture book author Anne Vasko and celebrated illustrator Toshiyuki Fukuda are set to unveil their new work, "Arm and Iruhta," with a special exhibition of original illustrations. This exhibition will take place at TOBICHI locations in Tokyo and Kyoto, showcasing the creative journey that led to this enchanting picture book.

The story follows a little girl named Arm, conceived by Vasko, who lives on a small island in the northern country, and an elderly bear named Iruhta, illustrated by Fukuda, who resides in a distant land from Arm's home. Each character embarks on their own distinct journey; the story begins from Arm's perspective on one side of the book, while Iruhta's tale unfolds from the other side, ultimately converging at the center. Visitors to the exhibition can expect a complete display of the artworks in Tokyo and around 15 selected pieces in Kyoto. This is a unique opportunity to appreciate the vivid colors and journeys of both characters.

In conjunction with the opening, a talk event featuring both Vasko and Fukuda, along with team members who contributed to the book's production, will be held in Tokyo. This event requires prior reservation—details can be found on the respective websites of TOBICHI.

A Journey of Friendship and Art

The remarkable friendship between Vasko and Fukuda began in 2010 during an exhibition in Finland, where they met through translator Keiko Morishita. The following year, the duo held their first joint exhibition in Japan, and it was during this event that they pledged to create a picture book together. Thus began a 15-year journey filled with various life experiences and changes, culminating in the creation of "Arm and Iruhta," which will finally be published in March 2026.

As part of the exhibition celebration, TOBICHI Tokyo will feature a full display of original illustrations from "Arm and Iruhta." From one side of the book, Vasko narrates Arm's story, while Fukuda tells Iruhta's tale from the opposite side. Eventually, the two journeys beautifully intersect in the middle of the book. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the vibrant journeys of the spirited girl Arm and the elderly bear Iruhta.

Unique Merchandise

In celebration of the book's release, the exhibition will offer exclusive merchandise related to the theme of "journey." Each item will feature unique and expressive color schemes, delicately crafted by both artists. Expect to find a variety of items such as postcard sets, stickers, stamp-like seals, and mini pouches from Fog Linen Work. Additional books and merchandise from both artists will also be available for purchase.

Special Events in Tokyo

On designated days during the exhibition, Vasko and Fukuda will be present at TOBICHI Tokyo for meet-and-greet opportunities. Visitors can enjoy discussions and may ask questions, as well as obtain signatures.
