Hart Howerton Announces 2025 Travel Fellowship Recipients

On April 7, 2025, Hart Howerton, a global leader in planning and design, proudly revealed the recipients of its sought-after 2025 Travel Fellowship Program. This year’s winners—Ming Leng, Patrick Lins, and Rain Yang—were chosen from an unprecedented number of applicants since the program’s inception in 2006.

Fellowship Candidates and Their Research Areas

Ming Leng

Ming Leng, enrolled in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the University of Southern California, aims to focus on public spaces tailored for children in Nordic cities. Her research will explore the delicate balance between fostering child-friendly urban environments and encouraging mixed-use community spaces.

Patrick Lins

A student in the Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Virginia, Patrick Lins will delve into the mythical landscapes of ancient Ireland. His investigation will examine landmarks from a period influenced heavily by magic and folklore, offering insights into how these narratives shaped ancient architecture.

Rain Yang

Rain Yang, pursuing a Master of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, will study dementia care villages in Europe. By analyzing how traditional village designs complement modern care practices, Yang’s insights aim to contribute to enhancing the living standards for individuals with dementia.

The Legacy of the Fellowship Program

Since its launch nearly two decades ago, Hart Howerton's Fellowship program has provided aspiring architects and designers with invaluable experiences in professional office settings, as well as encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. Each fellow is offered an opportunity for travel while pursuing a personal research theme. One of the Fellowship positions acknowledges the memory of Michael Cunningham, a long-standing principal at Hart Howerton, who advocated for the connection between education and professional practice. This year, Patrick Lins has earned the honor of becoming the Michael Cunningham Fellow.

A Unique International Experience

Now celebrating its 19th year, the program allows students to work closely with project teams in either the firm's New York or San Francisco offices. Following their travels, the Fellows return to complete internships and share their findings through presentations to the team. The Fellowship remains open to both undergraduate and graduate students in varied fields such as planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design, welcoming applications from around the globe.
