Stout ESOP Index Reveals Significant Growth Compared to S&P 500 in 2025

Stout ESOP Index Highlights Strong Performance

Stout has recently published its 2026 Stout ESOP Index, marking its second annual examination of the performance of privately owned companies that have incorporated employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). The findings reveal a robust 18.1% return for the year 2025, significantly outperforming the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 indices.

Key Performance Metrics

In comparison, the S&P 500 yielded a return of 16.4%, while the Russell 2000 lagged behind at 11.3% during the same period. Furthermore, the Index reports a commendable 18.0% annualized return over a five-year span, exceeding the S&P 500's 12.8% and Russell 2000's mere 4.7%.

What is particularly noteworthy is the performance of ESOPs based on their maturity. Companies with established ESOPs for more than 20 years produced an 18.3% five-year annualized return, which closely approached the 18.7% return of those plans active between five to ten years and markedly outperformed the 15.6% return from plans that have existed for a decade to two decades.

Sector Analysis

The Index includes enhanced analysis by introducing additional classifications and delving deeper into sector-specific performance. Notably, Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) companies led the pack, showcasing a substantial 23.1% five-year annualized return along with a 23.6% one-year return. Following this, the Industrials sector reflected promising results, achieving a 22.6% five-year annualized return.

Aziz El-Tahch, the President of ESOP Advisory at Stout, emphasized that the Index's examination of long-established ESOP companies underscores their ability to maintain financial success through various economic cycles. This information is invaluable not just for business owners but also for stakeholders involved in ESOPs as they evaluate performance metrics across diverse sectors and stages of business maturity.

In-Depth ESOP Performance

The 2026 Index goes beyond simple return measurements—it offers a granular perspective of ESOP performance by drawing new distinctions within industries. Additionally, it elaborates on how aspects like transaction leverage and loan repayment are integral to the performance observations related to ESOPs as they evolve. By juxtaposing annualized returns against one-, three-, and five-year timeframes, stakeholders can gain a more nuanced understanding of how ESOPs progress through their life cycles.
