Jon Batiste Inspires SCAD Graduates

On May 30 and May 31, 2025, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) celebrated a historic milestone as they welcomed over 4,200 graduates in the largest commencement ceremony in the university's history. Among the esteemed guests was none other than award-winning musician and composer Jon Batiste, who not only delivered a powerful commencement address but also performed for the graduates and their families.

The ceremonies took place in two separate venues — the Savannah Convention Center and the Gateway Center Arena in Atlanta. Batiste captivated the audience with his words of wisdom, encouraging graduates to embrace the journey ahead. “This moment right here is not only the beginning of you defining and shaping who you are in the world and what you will become... It’s a moment where you have this opportunity to really take it in and be at peace with the unexpected,” he stated, reminding them of the importance of remaining true to themselves amidst uncertainty.

SCAD's President and Founder, Paula Wallace, emphasized Batiste's profound influence in the creative arts, presenting him with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Batiste has built a reputation as a powerhouse of creativity through his unique blend of music, activism, and storytelling.

"It’s a gift to connect with and inspire the next generation of creative artists from this globally renowned university," Batiste shared, reflecting on the significance of the event. The graduates represented diverse disciplines, including interior design, film and television, graphic design, fashion, and more, all of which exemplify SCAD's commitment to nurturing creative talent since its founding in 1978.

Remarkably, the commitment to excellence at SCAD has led to an impressive 99% employability rate for graduates within 12 months of finishing their studies. Alumni have found success in some of the most prestigious companies around the globe, including Adobe, Disney, Google, NASA, and Ralph Lauren.

President Wallace expressed her pride in the graduates, calling them a hive of creativity and energy. She remarked, “Our happy hive hums with joy this spring as more than 4,200 SCAD Bees — a record — have danced across the commencement stage and will fly off to rewarding careers around the world.” The scene was filled with love and excitement, with families cheering for their graduates, creating a festive atmosphere filled with emotion.

In addition to Jon Batiste, honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees were also awarded to significant figures such as Joshua To, Meta’s Vice President of Design, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens during the events in Savannah and Atlanta, respectively.

As SCAD continues to prepare talented students for creative professions, the future remains bright for the next generation of artists, designers, and innovators. With inspiring role models like Jon Batiste leading the way, this year’s graduates are well-equipped to make their mark in the world.
