Moldova Set to Celebrate the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine This Year

Moldova: The Rising Star of the Wine World

Moldova, a small Eastern European country, is emerging as a key player in the global wine industry, and this year will proudly host the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine in Chișinău, the capital. Historically, Moldova is renowned for its exceptional vineyard density, boasting 4 hectares of vineyards for every 100 residents, which is the highest ratio in the world. With a total vineyard area of approximately 110,000 hectares, Moldova stands as the 14th largest wine exporter globally, and has established itself firmly within the top 20 wine-producing countries.

In 2024 alone, the nation exported an impressive 144 million liters of wine valued at over 234 million USD. This impressive volume travels to 73 different countries, with a significant portion destined for European markets. Here, wine serves not just as an industry but as a vital aspect of the national identity, culture, and economy. The Moldovan wine sector has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, particularly due to enhanced quality and improved tourism infrastructure that attracts wine enthusiasts from around the globe.

Moldova's reputation in international wine circles has soared recently, aided by its unique terroir and ancient winemaking traditions. Recognition has grown exponentially, as demonstrated by the thousands of medals that Moldovan wines have garnered in prestigious global competitions such as the Berliner Wine Trophy, Mundus Vini, Decanter World Wine Awards, and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. This acclaim has positioned Moldova as a formidable producer of quality wines, capable of competing on the world stage.

A significant turning point for promoting Moldovan wines internationally was the establishment of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV) and the launch of the national branding initiative, “Wine of Moldova: Unexpectedly Great,” in 2013. The upcoming World Congress, scheduled from June 16 to 20, 2025, will be held at the Palace of the Republic in Chișinău, uniting around 300 experts, researchers, winemakers, oenologists, producers, and policymakers from 51 member countries of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

Participants will engage in discussions surrounding the future of global wine production and partake in 13 technical visits to some of Moldova's most distinguished wineries. Additionally, attendees will enjoy a festive dinner at Cricova, the world-renowned underground wine city known for its extensive tunnels and fine wines.

Those interested in attending can explore participation packages through the official congress website at oiv2025.md. This event is organized collaboratively by the OIV, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the National Office for Vine and Wine. Notably, Moldova has been an OIV member since April 3, 2001, being the first from the CIS region to join the esteemed organization.

As the OIV celebrates its centenary in 2024, this congress marks the exciting beginning of its second century, with Moldova at the forefront, showcasing its rich winemaking heritage to the world. Whether you are a wine expert or an enthusiast, the upcoming congress promises to be a memorable experience, celebrating the vibrant culture and tradition of Moldovan wine.
