Soliton Conducts Preliminary Study for Remote Construction in Ukraine

Soliton Systems: Pioneering Remote Construction in Ukraine

The construction sector in Ukraine is currently facing significant challenges due to immense demand for rebuilding after recent turmoil and a severe shortage of labor. To ease these tensions, Soliton Systems, headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has embarked on a preliminary study aiming to foster remote construction techniques in the region.

Despite the immense need for reconstruction efforts, tasks such as debris removal are lagging behind, largely due to a lack of available workforce. Additionally, working conditions are fraught with danger, as unexploded ordnance and hazardous materials, including asbestos, remain prevalent. Soliton believes that the integration of remote-controlled construction machinery could provide a solution, enabling safe participation from vulnerable groups, including women and war-injured individuals.

To support this initiative, Soliton's proprietary "Zao series" utilizes advanced video communication technology, facilitating the remote operation of construction machinery. This technology has already seen significant adoption within Japan, showcasing its effectiveness and potential for greater applications.

In March of this year, Soliton became a key participant in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's initiative known as the Japan-Ukraine Platform on the Infrastructure Technology for Recovery and Reconstruction (JUPITeR). This collaborative effort marks a step toward supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction through innovative technology.

Last month, Soliton dispatched a team to Ukraine as part of a public-private joint team to conduct groundwork for forthcoming field experiments scheduled for this year. During their visit, the team assessed the available construction machinery and tested the quality of mobile communication networks. Moreover, productive discussions with local universities and enterprises took place to explore potential collaboration for future technology deployment.

The experiments will involve the operation of construction machinery from a temporary remote construction center set to be established in Kyiv. This will serve as a practical demonstration of the capabilities that remote operation can provide, bridging the gap between Ukrainian and Japanese construction machinery.

The project's success could pave the way for a significant transformation in how construction tasks are carried out in hazardous environments, making them safer and more efficient through the use of remote technology.
