Historic Achievement in Pickleball
In an inspiring turn of events, Yuuta Funemizu has become the first Japanese player to win a title in the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour, making sports history. This milestone was achieved during the final event of the 2026 season, the "PPA 500 San Clemente" held in California on May 10.
Competing alongside his partner, Tama Shimabukuro, Yuuta entered the tournament as the third seed. Their journey to the finals was remarkable, as they progressed through the quarterfinals by defeating the second-seeded team and then faced the tenth-seeded team in the semifinals, breezing through with a tenacious attitude.
The final match saw them against a 21st seed pair, and they maintained their momentum by winning the match decisively with a score of 2-0, earning them the coveted gold medal. This win marks a substantial leap in Yuuta's career, having previously achieved a best finish of fourth place in an earlier tournament!
Yuuta expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am incredibly happy to have won at a US professional tournament! I want to thank my friends and fans in both Japan and the US who have supported me to reach this point. Before this tournament, I channeled my frustrations from placing fourth the previous week and honed my teamwork skills with Tama."
He also encouraged the younger generation in Japan, saying, "I want you all to know that by having a strong resolve and continuing to challenge yourselves, the path to the world will surely open. I am committed to becoming a role model for you all. This victory is thanks to the support from everyone in Japan. I won't be satisfied with this result; my next goal is to challenge for the world ranking number one!"
