Seaspan Corporation Expands Fleet Connectivity with OneWeb Satellite Integration
Seaspan Corporation Partners with KVH for Enhanced Fleet Connectivity
VANCOUVER, BC - In a significant move to enhance its fleet capabilities, Seaspan Corporation has announced a new agreement with KVH Industries. This partnership aims to integrate OneWeb's advanced low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite solution into Seaspan's operations, setting the stage for a remarkable improvement in maritime connectivity.
As a recognized leader among independent containership lessors, Seaspan is making strides toward providing its vessels with quality internet services akin to those enjoyed on land. The integration of OneWeb’s LEO technology stands to not only augment existing connectivity infrastructures but also support the digital transformation vision that Seaspan has embarked upon.
Garret Wong, Vice President of Information Technology at Seaspan, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Our collaboration with KVH to utilize OneWeb services aligns perfectly with our objective of delivering unparalleled communication experiences across our fleet. This upgrade will play a crucial role in our quest for shore-like connectivity on our vessels. The benefits are immense, enhancing operational efficiency, safety protocols, and ultimately the welfare of our seafarers."
Seaspan is renowned for being one of the earliest adopters of LEO technology, making it the first substantial containership owner/operator to join forces with KVH for the OneWeb offering. The planned rollout is expected to fortify Seaspan's data connectivity framework and introduce high-bandwidth, low-latency capabilities. Such advancements will allow the deployment of sophisticated applications that require robust internet resources, such as cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms, which have historically been challenging to implement in maritime environments.
Adrian Alb, Senior Manager of IT Operations at Seaspan, noted the transformative potential of LEO satellite systems. "These technologies represent a quantum leap in vessel communications. With higher data rates, reduced latency, and enhanced reliability compared to traditional marine satellite systems, this partnership with KVH will help diversify our service providers and minimize blackout zones on the sea. This not only enriches our communication abilities but strengthens the overall robustness of our satellite communication infrastructure as well."
In support of this initiative, Chad Impey, Senior Vice President for Global Sales at KVH, expressed pride in collaborating with Seaspan. He remarked, "We're excited to facilitate Seaspan with the forthcoming deployment of our OneWeb services and hardware as part of the integrated KVH ONE multi-orbit, multi-channel network solution. Together, we're paving the way for next-generation communications at sea."
The integration of OneWeb satellite technology reflects Seaspan's commitment to embracing cutting-edge innovations that align with today’s shipping industry's demands. The maritime sector is rapidly evolving, fueled by digitalization, and achieving superior connectivity is paramount in staying competitive.
