Introduction
In a significant move towards inclusivity, Japan's leading firms have joined forces to launch a paid internship program aimed specifically at students and recent graduates with disabilities. Called the "IT Engineer Career Development Program," this initiative is set to commence in August 2026 and is designed to equip participants with essential skills for a career in IT.
Background
The employment figures for individuals with disabilities are on the rise. However, a recent survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reveals that over 60% of businesses still experience significant challenges in hiring disabled individuals. A major concern for many firms is the creation of suitable job roles within their organizations. Particularly within the information and communication sector—where heightened specialization often requires unique skills—the actual employment rate falls significantly below the national average, highlighting the need for better opportunities for disabled individuals.
In response to these challenges, three organizations have come together with a shared vision: to ensure that any determined individual, regardless of their background or experiences, can take the critical first step towards becoming an IT engineer.
Overview of the Program
The IT Engineer Career Development Program is structured to guide participants through their journey from novices to competent engineers. The program will span approximately six months, dividing the experience into three phases: onboarding, development, and practical application.
Participants will receive foundational training in IT and business, as well as comprehensive lessons on self-care and workplace etiquette. The Japan Research Institute (JRI), a core IT enterprise within the SMBC Group, will provide understanding and support tailored to the needs of participants throughout the duration of the internship. Starting from the halfway mark, participants will have the chance to take up real work tasks and earn a salary, paving the way for potential permanent employment at JRI in the future.
Program Phases:
1.
Onboarding Phase (August - September 2026):
In this preparatory phase, participants will deepen their understanding of disabilities and themselves, learning the fundamentals of the financial and IT industries. This period focuses on fostering a dedicated attitude towards their studies and work life, instilling a lifelong learning mindset.
2.
Initial Internship Phase (October 2026 - January 2027):
Participants will delve into a proprietary IT training program offered by JRI, gaining a systematic understanding of programming fundamentals and practical development techniques. Alongside this, they will take part in business foundation and self-care training, helping them build the groundwork for a career as an engineer.
3.
Final Internship Phase (January - February 2027):
During this phase, participants will be temporarily placed in actual departments, gaining near-real work experience while receiving continuous feedback through scheduled meetings. This time will also involve advanced IT training sessions aimed at refining their career paths as IT engineers.
