Tarlton's Incredible Journey: Honoring the U.S. Army Rangers at National Memorial of Military Ascent
Tarlton Brings History to Life at the National Memorial of Military Ascent
A Tribute to Courage
On June 6, 2026, Tarlton Corporation, recognized as St. Louis' largest women-owned general contracting and construction management firm, played a pivotal role in a momentous event—the dedication of the National Memorial of Military Ascent in Grafton, Illinois. This memorial stands as a significant tribute to the bravery displayed by U.S. Army Rangers during the historic climb at Pointe du Hoc on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Construction Management of a Historic Site
The first phase of the memorial represented an investment of $6 million and was managed by Tarlton, who executed the delicate installation of twelve life-size bronze statues. Each statue, weighing over 500 pounds, depicts the valor of the U.S. Army Provisional Ranger Group Second Battalion in their heroic efforts during the Normandy invasion. These statues are strategically located at the base of 100-foot limestone cliffs that overlook the Mississippi River, emulating the treacherous ascent faced by the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc. In addition to the statues, Tarlton designed a replica of a German bunker, which reflects the historical accuracy and significance of the site.
Vision Behind the Memorial
The inspiration for creating such a powerful memorial emerged from Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After visiting Normandy with family, he envisioned a tribute that would not only honor the courageous actions of the Rangers but also replicate a fragment of the iconic ascent that has resonated through American history. Mayor Morrow remarked, "Grafton's iconic limestone bluffs inspired the idea to simulate the historic ascent by the U.S. Army Rangers on D-Day to create a national memorial that recognizes their bravery and dedication to service."
Dream Becomes Reality
Through relentless fundraising initiatives, the Grafton community commissioned the bronze statues from Carolina Bronze Sculpture Inc., based in North Carolina. These statues were crafted based on scanned photographs of active members of the Second Ranger Battalion, ensuring authenticity. Some local residents even contributed their likeness, making the memorial a community project that embodies shared respect and camaraderie.
Mike Jones, a senior project manager at Tarlton, shared his thoughts on the project, stating, "This has been one of the most unique, impactful projects I've had the opportunity to work on." Precise geological testing was critical in preparing for the complex installation of the statues, ensuring they were accurately placed on the limestone bluff. Mofford Construction did rigorous site assessments to this end, employing mechanical lifts for safely installing the anchors that would support each artwork piece, highlighting the care taken with every stage of the project.
A Space for Reflection
The completion of this memorial is not just about celebrating history; it fosters a space where visitors can reflect on their personal stories related to service. Mayor Morrow also emphasized the educational aspect of this endeavor, saying, "Our hope is that visitors to the memorial will pause to reflect— and perhaps share with us during their visit—their own personal stories of a loved one who served on land or at sea during this period in history."
Tarlton’s President and COO, Sondra Rotty, expressed the weight her team felt while managing this project, encapsulating the deep respect and significance behind the venture. "Building the National Memorial of Military Ascent carried a weight our team felt from day one. We are grateful to have been entrusted with this work."
Looking Ahead: Phase Two of the Project
The City of Grafton is already setting its sights on the second phase of the project, aimed at further enhancing this space. Future construction will include a plaza adjacent to a visitor's center and a new 2,500-square-foot interactive museum dedicated to Vietnam War veterans. The museum will host both permanent and rotating exhibits, showcasing Grafton’s historical role in the construction of Navy Seal Team Assault Boats during the Vietnam War, thereby expanding the narrative of military service represented within the memorial.
A Community Committed to Remembrance
The National Memorial of Military Ascent promises to be a place of education, reflection, and a lasting tribute to those who sacrificed for freedom. As expressed by Mayor Morrow, the mission of this memorial and the surrounding plaza is threefold: to honor, educate, and ensure that the sacrifices of these heroes are never forgotten. The collaborative agency overseeing this project is Henderson Associates Architects located in Edwardsville, Illinois, marking another layer of community investment in this meaningful site.
