Introducing 'Youth Fit Mates': A New Fitness Program for Japanese High School Students

Youth Fit Mates: A New Era of Physical Education for Japanese High School Students

VIVOWA Inc., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, is on a mission to transform the physical education landscape for students enrolled in correspondence high schools. With around 300,000 students across Japan facing a significant shortage of physical activity due to the lack of conventional school practices, VIVOWA has developed an innovative fitness program named Youth Fit Mates. This new initiative is all set to launch on June 1, 2026, and the company is seeking to enroll 40 participants nationwide for its first cohort at no cost.

The Challenge of Physical Activity for Correspondence School Students

With the increasing diversity of educational institutions, the number of students attending correspondence high schools has risen sharply, accounting for 1 in every 10 high school students in Japan. While this reflects a positive trend towards varied educational opportunities, it also brings to light significant issues—most notably, the drastic reduction in opportunities for physical activity.

Students often face challenges such as the absence of a traditional school commute, limited hands-on physical education, and no option for extracurricular sports. These factors result in what VIVOWA describes as an “exercise gap,” leading to serious implications for the students' future physical fitness and self-efficacy.

Accessible and Safe Online Fitness

Starting this June, the Youth Fit Mates program will provide online fitness sessions tailored specifically for high school students, including those in junior high. Each session will take place on Zoom and will be held once to three times a week, with a duration of 30 minutes per session. The aim is to build strength and confidence in physical fitness through enjoyable and engaging group activities.

Participants can join with their cameras off, allowing for a comfortable, pressure-free environment where the focus is on personal growth rather than comparison. The program emphasizes psychological safety, making it an ideal choice for those who may be intimidated by traditional physical education settings.

A Structured Approach to Fitness

Each session will consist of a structured flow:
  • - Check-In
  • - Warm-Up
  • - Strength Training
  • - Aerobic Activities (including options like boxing and dancing)
  • - Cool Down
  • - Reflection and Praise Time

This format encourages a sense of community and support, embodying the core values of “Happy Face”, “No Comparison”, and “Cheer On”, ensuring participants can enjoy a supportive atmosphere.

Comprehensive Support from Experts

Youth Fit Mates isn’t just another fitness program; it combines the expertise of a diverse team of professionals, including fitness trainers, mental health specialists, and nutritionists who will guide students in their fitness journey. Among them is Keita Minagawa, a renowned trainer with over a decade of experience at cutting-edge fitness centers in New York and Los Angeles. Additionally, each participant will receive mentorship from college students, particularly graduated members from correspondence high schools, offering motivation and encouragement to maintain their fitness journeys.

The program will cover all three dimensions of health as defined by the WHO: physical, mental, and social well-being. Participants will aim to achieve a level of fitness that instills confidence in their daily activities over a two-month period.

Data-Driven Personalization

To ensure each participant receives tailored support, Youth Fit Mates will record data on their exercise routines, diet, stress levels, and sleep patterns. At the end of each month, individuals will receive a report detailing their progress and personalized recommendations from trainers based on their data.

Participants who meet specific criteria will also receive a Certificate of Completion from VIVOWA and their trainers, serving as tangible proof of their physical capabilities and helping them in future educational or career pursuits.

Building a Lifelong Community

Youth Fit Mates is committed to not only enhancing fitness but also creating a sense of belonging among participants. After classes, students will be encouraged to connect via Discord to celebrate their efforts and share personal accountability, fostering friendships that extend beyond the program itself.

Results Driven by Participation

Since trial runs began five months ago, VIVOWA has facilitated over 100 sessions with more than 300 participants. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with a satisfaction rate of 4.70 out of 5 and no reported injuries, ensuring a unique and safe experience for all.

Partnering for Future Growth

To make this program truly accessible, VIVOWA invites crew members (individual supporters) and co-creation partners (corporate sponsors) to join in their mission. By collaborating, they aim to reach more correspondence high school students and foster new opportunities in physical education.

In Closing

Koki Yamauchi, the CEO of VIVOWA, highlights the essence of this program, stating, “The worry that correspondence high school students lack the physical fitness for future commuting or schooling prompted the creation of Youth Fit Mates. It's not just about voicing these concerns; it’s about developing a proactive solution.” With hopes for a transformative impact, VIVOWA looks forward to welcoming the first cohort of students to this innovative program.
