The 5th Annual HarrisX–Ragan Survey has uncovered some illuminating insights from a diverse group of 400 CEOs and communications leaders. This survey sheds light on how the industry is adapting to the rapid advancements brought about by AI, while also navigating the challenges and opportunities these changes present.
AI's Pervasive Role in Communications
According to the survey, an impressive 95% of organizations have incorporated AI into their communications strategies, with 96% of those acknowledging the positive effects of this shift. Notably, one out of three organizations reports that AI handles over half of their communications workloads, and by 2030, this number is expected to exceed 55%. This reveals a growing trend where many CEOs are leaning towards using custom-trained AI tools rather than relying solely on experienced human speechwriters when drafting important speeches.
Moreover, CEOs expressed an innovative perspective, with 57% stating they would prefer a custom-trained AI tool for crafting pivotal communications over traditional professionals lacking AI assistance. This inclination indicates a shift in how corporate messaging is being structured, stemming from a desire for greater control amidst increasing political polarization and public backlash.
A New Era for Comms Leaders
Diane Schwartz, CEO of Ragan Communications, emphasized that we are perched on the brink of a momentous change. Although leaders maintain a solid trust in their communications teams, there is a compelling interest in the capabilities AI offers. Schwartz articulated the need for communications professionals to assert their unique human traits—namely strategy, creativity, and empathy—while effectively managing the efficiencies AI introduces to their work processes.
The survey results further amplified this notion, indicating a majority of communications leaders (70%) recognize that AI enhances their effectiveness in their roles, contrary to the apprehension voiced by just 13% who fear AI might supplant their positions. A significant 68% believe AI will augment the contributions of internal teams by offering scalable and strategic services.
Diverging Perspectives on Corporate Voice
While CEOs display a tendency to curtail their companies' engagement in social and political matters, communications leaders advocate for a more vocal stance. The survey revealed that 58% of executives feel their organizations are overly vocal on these issues, in stark contrast to the 59% of comms leaders advocating for a more proactive approach. These divergent perspectives underscore a critical dialogue within organizations about the role of corporate voice in the public arena and the balance between silence and speaking out on pressing social matters.
Trust Dynamics Between CEOs and Comms Leaders
Despite the evident tension, the trust between CEOs and communications leaders remains robust. An overwhelming 83% of CEOs expressed their high regard for their communications teams, and nearly all (98%) feel these leaders have sufficient access to them. However, there remains a gap in consultation, as only 56% regularly engage their communications teams before major decisions, highlighting a disconnect that merits addressing.

The 5th Annual HarrisX–Ragan Survey was conducted online between August and October 2025 among 400 U.S. executives, including 125 CEOs and 275 communications leaders. The study's margin of error stands at ±4.9 percentage points for the overall sample.
