CATL Launches World's First 9 MWh Ultra-Large Energy Storage System

CATL Launches Groundbreaking Energy Storage System

On May 8, 2025, at the ees Europe 2025 trade fair, CATL unveiled its revolutionary TENER Stack, touted as the world's first 9 MWh ultra-large-capacity energy storage system. This game-changing innovation promises to enhance energy efficiency while addressing logistics challenges associated with large-scale energy deployment.

As global energy demands soar, driven by AI-powered data centers and electrification of industries, TENER Stack allows utilities, developers, and industrial users to maximize economic value from their installations.

“CATL has always been at the forefront of energy transformation,” stated Amanda Xu, CTO and President of CATL ESS Europe. “With our new TENER energy storage solution, we’re overcoming energy capacity constraints and improving space efficiency, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.”

Key Features of TENER Stack

1. Massive Capacity and Efficiency
TENER Stack features CATL's high-density battery cells, achieving a remarkable 45% improved volume utilization and a 50% increase in energy density compared to conventional 20-foot container systems. With an internal capacity of up to 9 MWh, TENER Stack is capable of charging 150 electric vehicles or powering an average German household for up to six years.

2. Dual Architecture Flexibility
Supporting both centralized and cascade architectures, the TENER Stack is designed to seamlessly integrate with conventional AC side devices, broadening its application range across various network solutions.

3. Space Efficiency
Notably, deploying a 800 MWh energy storage system with TENER requires nearly one-third fewer units than traditional 6 MWh systems. This reduction cuts down the number of Power Conversion Systems (PCS), effectively lowering hidden costs associated with system oversizing and boosting land use efficiency by 40%. Developers can anticipate up to a 20% optimization in overall construction costs for the energy stations.

4. Innovative Transport Solution
Recognizing logistical hurdles with containers exceeding 36 tons, CATL has engineered a “two-in-one” unit. Each half-height unit remains strictly under 36 tons, complying with transport regulations in 99% of global markets. This innovative design allows for standard transportation methods, including common container dump trucks, reducing waiting times and specialized shipping costs by as much as 35%.

5. Advanced Safety Measures
With fire safety being a top concern globally, TENER Stack leverages CATL's robust lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery materials known for their thermal stability. Enhanced gas detection systems provide 40% greater sensitivity, activating suppression systems 35% faster. Its three-layer insulation construction increases fire resistance to two hours, while meeting seismic standards of IEEE693, capable of withstanding earthquakes of magnitude 9 and Category 5 hurricanes.

6. Environmental Considerations
TENER Stack doesn't just focus on storage but embodies a comprehensive energy vision. By November 2024, CATL’s ESS products will have been deployed across over 1,700 projects globally, covering diverse climatic zones and operational environments.

In a fast-evolving energy landscape, CATL continues to innovate with solutions that promise to deliver enhanced energy capabilities safely and sustainably. Hank Zhao, CTO of CATL ESS Europe, emphasized, “TENER Stack is not just a product for energy storage; it's a worldwide solution for energy accessibility. With every breakthrough in energy density, we can derive greater energy value from less space.”

In summary, CATL’s TENER Stack not only pushes the boundaries of energy storage but sets a new benchmark in capacity, safety, and efficiency, reaffirming its commitment to aiding global partners in the energy transition responsibly and sustainably.
