New Recycling Initiative at FamilyMart and BookOff



In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at promoting a sustainable society, FamilyMart and BookOff have announced the launch of a pilot program to establish clothing and miscellaneous item collection boxes called "R-LOOP" inside FamilyMart stores. This initiative will commence on April 13, 2026, targeting approximately 30 stores primarily located in the residential neighborhoods of Setagaya and Suginami wards in Tokyo.

The R-LOOP project aims to facilitate a seamless process for consumers to dispose of unwanted items, emphasizing convenience and accessibility. By harnessing the existing infrastructure of convenience stores, the initiative seeks to encourage more people to participate in recycling and reuse, thereby contributing to a less wasteful society.

Aiming for a Circular Economy


Japan currently faces a significant waste challenge, with approximately 560,000 tons of clothing discarded annually as refuse. The government has set an ambitious goal to reduce the amount of clothing waste disposed of by households by 25% by the fiscal year 2030, compared to 2020 levels. This action plan prioritizes the establishment of a national collection system that any household can access easily.

Despite understanding that tossing out usable items is wasteful, many individuals find it inconvenient to incorporate reuse and recycling into their daily lives. To address this issue, BookOff aims to reduce barriers and provide accessible options for consumers to hand over unwanted items. With a mission to enrich the lives of many, BookOff believes that making reuse effortless can lead to a richer lifestyle, thereby introducing the R-LOOP service as a catalyst for achieving a "no-waste society."

Features of the R-LOOP Initiative


Under this partnership, several key benefits of the R-LOOP system will be highlighted:
1. Hassle-free Reuse Experience: Consumers can simply drop unwanted clothing and items into specially designated collection boxes in-store, completing a reuse action in under 10 seconds. The system bypasses the need for packaging, shipment, or waiting for appraisals, allowing for a quick and easy recycling experience during everyday shopping trips.
2. Transparency and Trust: Items placed in the R-LOOP boxes will be handled responsibly. BookOff’s network, including the overseas reuse retailer Jalan Jalan Japan, will ensure these items are re-circulated effectively. Moreover, each waste collection bag will feature a tracking sticker to monitor the performance around recyclables and reused items.
3. Social Contributions: For every kilogram of items collected, a donation of 1 yen will be made to NPOs committed to environmental protection and social issues, allowing customers to directly connect their desire to minimize waste with tangible societal contributions.

Envisioning the Future: Local Community Engagement


In partnership with local municipalities, BookOff is not just taking corporate responsibility but is actively engaging with the communities they serve through R-LOOP. By setting up collection boxes in easily accessible locations like city halls, universities, and sports centers, residents will be encouraged to participate in recycling without hassle.

This collaboration seeks to reduce waste and build a more sustainable future for the community while educating the public on the value of reuse. Since its service initiation in November 2024, R-LOOP has effectively collected 57 tons of goods, contributing to a reduction of 113 tons of CO2 emissions, showcasing the tangible impact of this initiative.
