Aerosense Enhances Drone Logistics Between Tokyo's Islands for 2024

Enhancing Drone Logistics in Tokyo's Islands

Aerosense Inc., based in Kita, Tokyo, is stepping forward with an innovative project aimed at establishing drone logistics routes between Tokyo's islands as part of the "Tokyo Treasure Island Project." Initiated in October 2024, this undertaking seeks to utilize drones for logistics purposes, contributing not only to efficient transportation but also revitalizing local communities. This initiative occurs in collaboration with Japan Airlines (JAL), showcasing a commitment to modernizing logistics operations in Japan's island regions.

Progress of the Tokyo Treasure Island Challenge Project

As part of the 2024 Tokyo Treasure Island Challenge Project, Aerosense's vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone, the "Aero Bowing," has been promoted for enhancing inter-island connections. Since the project's launch, operational efforts have begun with local personnel: two individuals on Shikineshima Island and one on Niijima Island, executing various initiatives that include:

  • - Regular patrols and monitoring in anticipation of emergencies.
  • - Surveillance and studies focusing on environmental preservation, including forests, marine life, and illegal fishing activities.
  • - Capturing and editing aerial footage showcasing the islands' appeal, distributed via platforms like YouTube.

Challenges in Implementing Drone Logistics and Collaboration with JAL

Current issues facing island logistics include rising maintenance costs for maritime vessels and the challenge of sustaining aging cargo ships, resulting in cutbacks on service frequency. There is a significant expectation from local islanders for the implementation of drone logistics. To address these needs, Aerosense is partnering with JAL to capitalize on the Aero Bowing's capabilities, focusing on developing service routes for governmental exchange shipments, prescriptions, and postal deliveries across the islands. After constructing the logistics routes, Aerosense plans to begin operations with the Aero Bowing, initially handling lightweight cargo. Furthermore, the company aims to introduce its larger drone, the AS-H1, capable of carrying payloads up to 10kg over a maximum range of 120 kilometers, later this year, significantly boosting logistics capabilities.

In collaboration with JAL, efforts are underway to formulate logistics routes connecting four key islands: Shikineshima, Niijima, Toshima, and Kouzushima. JAL's responsibilities include:
  • - Establishing secure flight paths for drone operations.
  • - Assessing flight conditions based on terrain, weather, communication infrastructure, and maritime traffic.
  • - Developing operational guidelines addressing emergency responses, alternative landing sites, and management systems for operation safety.
  • - Compiling flight planning guides, related manuals, and standard operation procedures.

Aerosense's Commitment to Innovation

As a leading domestic drone manufacturer, Aerosense has developed a comprehensive lineup of drones that are increasingly being adopted by various corporations and local governments. Their advanced performance and reliability have earned recognition from ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Ministry of Education. With the Tokyo Treasure Island Project entering its third year, Aerosense is actively pursuing opportunities to broaden the scope of these services to other islands in the Izu archipelago. This proactive approach aims to invigorate island communities through efficient drone logistics.

As Aerosense continues to drive drone technology forward, the future of logistics between Tokyo's islands looks promising, ushering in a new era of connectivity and community engagement.
