Expanding Patient Education: Healthy Interactions Partners with ADA
Healthy Interactions LLC has made a significant announcement that its Patient Medication Education Program will be part of the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Education Recognition Program (ERP) starting October 2026. This collaboration aims to enhance patient education and support within the diabetic community and beyond.
The ADA’s ERP includes around 1,200 recognized programs spread across 3,554 sites throughout the United States, all focused on promoting effective diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES). The addition of Healthy Interactions' innovative educational program will offer patients invaluable resources at crucial moments in their care.
Barbara Eichorst, Vice President of Health Care Programs at the ADA, emphasized the importance of education when patients start new medications or devices. “Through the Education Recognition Program, we aim to connect patients with timely, person-centered resources,” she stated. The goal is to empower patients to comprehend their therapies fully and to prepare them for informed discussions with their healthcare teams.
The Patient Medication Education Program by Healthy Interactions provides live, virtual, and small-group education sessions designed explicitly for patients who've been prescribed new medications or devices. Unlike traditional programs that cover general therapeutic classes, this initiative focuses on the medication or device specific to the participants' needs. This tailored approach ensures that patients gain relevant insights into their prescribed therapies.
Initially, the program will address medications and devices related to cardiometabolic conditions, diving into management strategies for diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The expectation is to expand the program to incorporate additional health conditions in the future.
Starting a new therapy often raises numerous questions: Why is this treatment necessary? How should it be used? What benefits and side effects can be anticipated? How affordable will it be, and how does it fit into daily life routines? Addressing these concerns is critical as they heavily influence a patient’s willingness to start and continue their prescribed treatments.
Healthy Interactions uses the Conversation Map® methodology during its education sessions, providing a blend of visual learning and interactive discussion. This format allows patients to engage deeply with their prescribed therapies, ask practical questions, and learn from the perspectives of their peers under the guidance of a trained healthcare professional. Such a collaborative environment encourages a vibrant exchange of ideas and supports patients in identifying topics they wish to discuss with their healthcare providers.
The program will be made accessible through the ADA-recognized programs, as well as approximately 4,000 U.S. primary care clinics involved in the Healthy Interactions Primary Care Alliance. This initiative significantly expands the program’s reach, as it aims to service an estimated 30 million adult patients across the United States. Plans are underway to expand the primary care network even further to cover 12,000 clinics, eventually impacting over 100 million individuals.
Paul Lasiuk, CEO of Healthy Interactions, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative by stating, “A prescription can signal the beginning of a patient’s journey with questions rather than marking an endpoint in their conversation.” This education program offers dedicated time for patients to grasp their new therapy, engage with healthcare professionals, and connect with others on similar treatment paths.
One of the program’s key features is that Healthy Interactions will facilitate the education sessions, removing the burden from participating ERP programs and primary care clinics, which will not need to utilize their own staff for these activities. In adherence to privacy and program requirements, necessary information will be shared with referring organizations to ensure continuity of education and care.
It’s essential to note that while the Patient Medication Education Program enhances patient support, it is designed to complement existing healthcare services rather than replace them. The sessions are structured to provide education without prescribing medications, recommending treatment alterations, or providing specific medical advice. Patients with clinical inquiries are encouraged to consult qualified members of their healthcare team.
The rollout of the Patient Medication Education Program through the ADA Education Recognition Program is slated for October 2026. Joining forces with the ADA underscores Healthy Interactions’ commitment to providing effective education while navigating the complexities of medication management.
