Exhibition Overview

The exhibition will open with a reception on July 4, 2026, from 16:00 to 18:00, where guests will have the rare opportunity to engage with Hod himself. Open from 11:30 to 18:00 (Tuesday to Saturday), the gallery will remain closed on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays.

KOTARO NUKAGA is located at 1-32-8 Higashi-Shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, inside TERRADA Art Complex II. This venue is a cornerstone for contemporary art lovers.

Highlights of the Exhibition

1. Engaging Reflective Experience
One of the striking elements of Hod’s work is how the chrome surface beckons the viewer's presence into the artwork. The paintings extend beyond mere re-presentation of nature, instead acting as a space that triggers dormant memories within the viewer. Through the reflection, the artwork revitalizes the act of observing art itself. The 100 Years Is Not Enough series finds its inspiration in the artist's time spent experiencing nature during the pandemic, encapsulating the sentiment that appreciating the beauty of life requires far more than a hundred years.

Although the floral images that emerge in these works often remind one of Monet's Water Lilies, Hod's pieces transcend mere reenforcement of classical art. They are instead tinged with an enigmatic feeling, becoming familiar yet unknown through the interplay of reflections and the traces of time engraved on the surface.
Hod's consistent subject matter revolves around the coexistence of beauty and decay within the same frame. His pieces allure the viewer with their beauty, simultaneously introducing a sense of unease, where emotions tied to time, memory, and loss subtly emerge, creating a duality that connects his early works to his current series.

2. The Beauty of Accidental Processes
The creation of 100 Years Is Not Enough involves layering traditional oil painting techniques with chrome and then transforming the surface through chemical reactions using acid and ammonia.
Hod applies chrome pigment using a high-pressure air gun, creating a reflective surface that resembles a mirror. However, he also engages in a deliberate process of 'destruction' by peeling away the outer layers, exposing underlying sections. The careful balance between control and chance leads to surfaces that embody complexity in light and color depth. Rather than existing merely as finished products, the paintings resonate as ‘events’ marked by time and processes.

3. A Flourishing International Career
Nir Hod has garnered considerable acclaim through exhibitions in prestigious forums, including the Tel Aviv Museum and the Sara Hildén Art Museum. His art has transcended boundaries, showcased at Art Basel and a variety of galleries globally. Hod's works have also reached luxury brands; commissioned pieces are set to be displayed in the newly opened House of Dior New York, designed by architect Peter Marino, and at House of Dior Shinsaibashi in Osaka, continuing to elevate his international reputation.

About Nir Hod

Born in Tel Aviv in 1970 and now based in New York, Hod studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design before continuing at Cooper Union in New York. His work fluidly traverses mediums such as sculpture, video, and canvas, exploring concepts like beauty, contrast, sexuality, and the ephemeral nature of purity. At the core of his artistic expression lies a narrative that emphasizes the ambivalence present within humanity. Challenging the notion of guilt associated with indulgence, Hod promotes curiosity, inspiring reflections on greater possibilities beyond life itself. Through his work, he suggests that reality becomes more beautiful when viewed from an extraordinary angle. Since his first solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum in 2005, he has shared his art across various esteemed institutions and has been featured in significant media outlets, underscoring his relevance in the contemporary art scene.

Through the unfolding of Flowers of Memory, Nir Hod invites audiences not only to witness beauty but also to engage in a dialogue about memory, loss, and the passage of time, making this exhibition a pivotal moment in contemporary art.
