United Food Bank Prepares for Increased Demand Amid SNAP Benefit Cuts

As of November 1, approximately 250,000 residents in Hillsborough County, Florida, are set to experience significant cuts to their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. In response to this pressing issue, United Food Bank and Services is gearing up to support thousands of families facing food insecurity. Given the scale of this impending crisis, the organization anticipates a staggering increase in demand for its services, estimating that requests for food assistance could rise by as much as 35 to 45 percent.

United Food Bank has been a cornerstone of the local community since its inception in 1991, providing a vital safety net for those in need. Mary Heysek, the President and CEO, emphasizes the organization's commitment to helping families during tumultuous times, stating, "Our organization has always provided support for our community when challenging times like these arise. That will never stop. As one in eight families lose access to their food assistance, this crisis will turn into compassion that will end up uniting us."

Currently, the food bank is serving over 15,000 individuals every month. Over the past year alone, the organization distributed over 4.2 million pounds of food, translating to more than 3.5 million meals provided to children, families, and seniors across Eastern Hillsborough County. However, with the upcoming SNAP cuts, the urgency for support has never been greater.

To meet this unprecedented demand, United Food Bank is actively seeking assistance from the community. They aim to raise $50,000 to provide emergency food supplies and other critical resources for families impacted by these benefit reductions. Notably, a generous donor has pledged to match donations up to $10,000, effectively doubling the community's impact in supporting those in need.

How You Can Help

Community support plays a vital role in ensuring that vulnerable families do not go hungry during this challenging time. Here are a few ways to contribute:

  • - Monetary Donations: Every dollar counts, and contributions can be made to help reach the fundraising goal. By donating through the link provided by United Food Bank, your impact can be doubled thanks to the matching donor.
  • - Food Donations: Essential items such as rice, pasta, soups, canned fruits, and vegetables are urgently needed. Donations can be dropped off at their facility located at 702 E. Alsobrook Street, Plant City, FL 33563, from Monday to Thursday, between 8:15 AM and 3:30 PM. For convenience, collection bins are also available behind the food bank for easy drop-off.

Mary Heysek reiterates the importance of community support: "Every dollar and every donation helps feed families and children during this critical time. With community support, we can ensure that neighbors in Eastern Hillsborough County do not go hungry while SNAP benefits are reduced."
